DLA - extra information required re mobility and ASD

Hi My DS1 is 8 with ASD diagnosis and currently being assessed for ADHD, also has a diagnosis via his Statement of MLD. We submitted a renewal of his DLA a couple of months ago and were awarded high rate care and low rate mobility. I asked for a reconsideration of the mobility component, primarily because his twin also has similar diagnoses and was awarded high rate mobility (I literally copied that section of the form from one to the other).

They are now requesting additional information on his mobility and stating they need independent information, from his school, for example with regards to his mobility issues. He has typical sensory seeking difficulties with walking, zero safety awareness, needs physical contact with an adult when outside and because of his increasing physical strength is almost impossible to get to walk if he refuses to do so which is fairly frequently. My difficulty is that in school he is reasonably compliant with some bad days but there are few opportunities for walking about outside so I don't think they really will support my claim effectively if asked. Any advice re how to take it forward?

I'm sure school are going to be supporting you with this fully?...they will need to specify that 'breaktime' and lunchtime are mainly spent indoors because of difficulties?...or 1:1 is constant during these times...that if the they are going on outings or trips..that you DS is supported fully 1:1 and his care and management is very much also dependent in his compliance, etc in any given situation

As the DLA seek to have evidence...that it must be a reflection of the 'worst case scenario' and details of....
It sounds like compliance is high on the list as is the limited mobility ability...eg distance, different environmental disturbances such as crowds, type of surface when walking which is impossible or very difficult, etc....even the weather can be a big issue...windy, rain, etc making refusals greater and situations escalate or just not even get out!....

You need to sit and perhaps help school to complete this...they may have little experience and your input will be crucial...see if you can at least influence the report by discussing everything and making things as clear as poss for school to respond as you need them to....twist arms if necessary!!

Good luck...and appeal strongly if you get knocked back at first
I'm not sure if Ive said anything helpful...you know much more than I...but sending my support...yet another battle we fight eh!
