Could DD have aspergers?

Strong genetic link in my family, DS is diagnosed HFA (I probably have it too and other family members most likely to have aspergers or HFA, including one case of diagnosed classic autism.

DD is now seven, was a hellish baby, screamed for 3 months. Ok as a toddler (but absolutely no separation anxiety whatsoever, happy to play on her own for the entire day, never minded being left. Always very fussy about seems, and textures.

Started school, very advanced academically in all areas except hand writing, struggles socially (never invited to playdates) although some of that may be my fault! Always wants to be in charge and lead everything. Gets on well with older children and adults. Very pedantic, uses very advanced words (more like an adult)

She is also hypermobile.

Not interested in toys, watches Harry Potter over and over again, or plays on the computer. Likes mixing up potions (ie water and flour and leftover kitchen stuff)

Takes 2 - 3 hours to fall asleep every night (like her brother)

I did mention my concerns to the school, but they dismissed it, as she is doing well academically

she may well have dev (hello btw, not 'seen' you for ages)

can you go to your GP with your concerns?

Many if not practically all staff in school are simply not either skilled or trained enough to spot children with additional needs, let alone a girl who could well be on the ASD spectrum.

Re school I would seriously consider now applying for a statement for her due to her social/communication needs. Also when she gets into secondary school her life could fall apart very quickly if her needs at that time are not being met either.

I would ask your GP to refer you onto a developmental paediatrician and do not take no for an answer.

What Attila said. We are still beating ourselves up for letting ourselves be put off by know-it alls at primary school who turned out to be know-sweet -eff-alls. It all went badly wrong on starting secondary, belated Asperger's diagnosis at that point not enough to undo the earlier damage.
