my little one is 16 months old and i think he may have asd we are awaiting a pediatrican apointment but i was reading online that children with asd usually dont like to play ball as they see it more of a social thing to do my son loves to play ball infact hes fascinated and it makes him very happy. what are your thoughts? can some children have traits of asd and not have all of the symptoms as id say my son has some but not all. sorry new to this so apoligize if im not explaining it quite right thanks

My DS is 5 and has ASD.

He likes to play ball but only on his terms. He doesnt do the passing back and forwards thing, but will catch it and throw it away from me, so I have to go after it.

His favourite thing to do with the ball is roll it down the stairs, where I stand at the bottom and I throw it to him so he can roll it down. He loves this and it gets him very excited.

And yes, ASD is a spectrum, so a child can have some traits and not others, or have many difficulties in one particular area.

My son is 7 with AS.

He has always loved balls. He esp likes bouncy balls or to hit the swing ball really hard.

In order to get a dx they have to have the triad of impairments but how those impairments manifest will vary hugely.

Good luck with your journey.

DD (4) has autism (rather severe) and loves balls. 'Ball' was her second word (1st was light Grin ). She loves kicking the ball etc but rather on her terms but likes to kick the ball forth and back...

DS never liked kicking a ball, but we would play the ball game on the stairs for ages! Any interactions like that are good, whatever the DX, so while it doesn't mean he doesn't have ASD, it's still a 'good thing.' Smile

My child is/was language delayed with ASD traits (no DX yet at any rate). He loved playing ball, could do the proper back and forth thing with a ball at 1 (about the only social milestone he ever aced!)

Thats exactly what my DS will do Ellen - wont concentrate on anything else for more than 2 minutes, but can roll a ball up and down the stairs for hours.

I know! Grin We even called it 'the ball game' and had a special ball for it. It was nice to see we weren't the only ones.

Another ball down the stairs gamer here SmileEven a huge space hopper ets chucked down the stairs- I always have to go at he bottom and throw it back up.
He's never liked kicking a ball in a game, but every so often hoofs one when he sees one. He loves throwing them over the garden fence as well, luckily our neighbours are great and chuck everything back.
DH and I have spent ages(years) with roll/bounce/throw/kick the ball to each other saying "Mummy's turn" "Daddy's turn""mini Rinky's turn" and he will join in now. Was laughing at the comment about throwing it away so you have to go and get it, yes, DS likes that game too.
