dyslexia, going into sixth form is there a grant for laptop?

My son thinks he was told by the old SEN person at his school that he would be able to get a grant to help with cost of laptop when he moved into 6th form. This was about 2 years ago and she has since left (and not replaced...).

I have googled it but can only find something for undergraduates not 6th form Has he got it wrong or does anybody know where I can find out?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure you can't. DS1 got the lot for uni at the school's instigation, but not at school. We have laptops we lend, but that is not a scheme, just a policy.

I thought all schools by law had to have a SENCO.

Ooh, have also heard this. I'm in primary (sen teacher) atm but spent years in FE sen. Will get back to the person who told me ASAP and find out. He's got a severely dyslexic ds too who's doing A levels Smile Don't know if they went thru dyslexia action or what. - they seem to have a lot to do with it. Only catch that I can think of is if it's different in each geographical area.

school had brilliant sen person but her funding was lost don't truly understand it - but we all wrote letters complaining about it. They also lost a German teacher at the same time. Now one of the other teachers takes the lead for SENCO but doesn't appear to be a specialist as she can't do any of the testing/assessments.

He told me yesterday that a friend's sister had got £200 when she went into this sixth form for a laptop. So maybe its a local thing. Any info greatly appreciated. I know about DSA for University but I think this is different.

I got ds1 (age 10 at the time) a grant for his netbook, voice recognition software and his Irlen lenses (coloured glasses to u and me) but did it through another route... Hmm.
Have messaged my other source of info Wink will let you know if anything useful appears!

You've probably seen this - just being impatient having a look whilst waiting for a reply from other friend.
Ime the school/ college usually do provide laptop etc in sixth form for the child to use, but it's the school's and the dc don't take it home. This happens in primary, high schools and sixth form in our area.

Thanks MrsShrek. Son does have netbook bought when first diagnosed. He'd like to upgrade it to full sized one so he can learn to touchtype. He happens to have enough savings to buy one himself via many years of birthday presents being shoved in account but if there is any funding then obviously he can use that towards it.

thanks MrsShrek will take a look and let you know how we get on. It'd be nice to get some help if available to save his savings for Uni - especially as my pay will run out soon!

On those grounds, I think you should be looking into educational charitable grants. Smile
