A bit overwhelmed really.

So we went to Bristol to talk about the SDR operation for DD. He felt it was something that she would be suitable for and that it would benefit her. However, our NHS trust has not yet funded the op for anyone. So we need to raise £40,000. That is overwhelming enough to be honest.

However, since starting the fundraising last week, I have been completely blown away by the kindness of so many people. We've had donations from people we don't know - friends of friends, etc. A friend made our webpage, we have friends making and selling things for the fund, we have a complete stranger (ex-colleague of a friend) running a marathon for her. We've been on local radio and will be on the front page of the local paper tomorrow (unless the town blows up or some similar emergency...) and the editor of the paper has been so moved by the story he wants to run a campaign for her with a series of articles on her. It doesn't even end there! We bought some collection tins on eBay and the seller read the website and refunded us so all we paid was the postage. We're also planning a casino night as our first event, and the casino hire company will provide the equipment free - we just pay the croupiers' wages and delivery.

I've probably forgotten some other things.

I am absolutely overwhelmed... There are so many good people in the world.

I just thought I'd share because sometimes we need a positive story!

Wow, galena, It is lovely to hear something so positive and it sounds like it wont be long before you reach your target.

Good luckSmile

It's also served to take my mind off the Statutory assessment request too ;)

Blimey, - people might be kind but sounds like you've been extremely hard at work to raise awareness. Not sure I'd be able to do it. Well done!!!

mymatemax · 22/08/2012 16:29

Fantastic News! Does MN have a company charity of the year that it supports Wink

Galena · 22/08/2012 16:44

:) I hadn't contacted them, mymate, but they didn't retweet me. :(

I might ask them. They told me I couldn't place a message in chat linking to the website/justgiving page. But didn't say 'Let us raise that money for you!' I doubt they'd even accept someone else starting a thread saying 'I've got a spare fiver, which charity could I give it to?' that I could leap onto straight away... Grin

It really really helps that DD is cute though. :) Must've got it from me!

Well done! I was so blown away when we started, we got over half the amount in 5 weeks, it was staggering! Even now, after things have changed, we still get people offering donations for physio or equipment. It's heartwarming.

Good luck Galena, you'll get there before you know it!

auntevil · 22/08/2012 17:04

Really pleased for you, DD and the family. Shows how many people out there actually do give a damn.

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 22/08/2012 17:09

fantastic news galena Smile

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 22/08/2012 17:26

Oo, will you be in the local rag, rag, rag...? Wink How exciting, I'll look out for you.

Galena · 22/08/2012 18:21

Thanks hairy - I'm hoping that's what'll happen here. (only at 3% so far!) And yes, Ellen, that's the one... :) Just don't blow the place up, there's a dear!

silverfrog · 22/08/2012 18:34

oh, that's so lovely Smile

and echo the others who have said well done for raising awareness - very impressive.

Sad that MNHQ won't let you link - a couple of years ago I was able to link for dd1's funrun, to rais funds for her (tiny) school. and there have been other people linking too, for various things, over the years. wonder what has changed in that respect?

Galena · 22/08/2012 18:41

The response was 'We have a policy of not encouraging threads specifically about individual links on our boards, as our members tend to see such posts as spam.'

And a link to the Charities board (which has next to no footfall!)

OP posts:
silverfrog · 22/08/2012 18:49

oh, post it on the charities board, and maybe we can move our nonsense chatter over to it to keep it bumped up Wink Grin

or post it on the charities board, and then a sensationally titled chat thread linking to it?

Galena · 22/08/2012 19:36

Lol, sensationally titled chat thread?! Have you seen the rubbish responses any of my threads get on Chat? I think people go, 'Oh God, it's HER again!'

But I may post it on the Charity thread and then if anyone else chose to link to it, that wouldn't be my fault, would it? Grin

OP posts:
Galena · 22/08/2012 19:52

Anyone fancies linking, this is the thread... Grin

Galena

Dont forget lots of the big name celebs have charitable donations & you can do a charity internet search where you put in the criterea & it will tell you which charities you may be eligible for a donation from.
Also check local rotary club, mayors charities etc etc. Even if they cant help they are good at pointing you in the right direction to funds.

Galena · 22/08/2012 20:02

Yep - I'm on the case of the local ones... Do you know where I can search the charities on criteria?

OP posts:
mymatemax · 22/08/2012 21:32

i used a charity search website when i was trying to raise money for ds2's school, i'll try to think what it was called.
There is the community network fund ? (or something similar) who can put you in touch with regional groups

mymatemax · 22/08/2012 21:33

try www.charitysearch .com

lisad123 · 22/08/2012 21:54

here is local story for girl at dd2 school. Raised whole amount in just over four months!!

Galena · 22/08/2012 22:56

Fab, thanks. I'll look when I have a minute. Hospital appointment and overnight guests tomorrow...

That story is fab! It'd be amazing to raise it in a few months! Not holding my breath though.

Galena · 23/08/2012 07:44
