Dd2 is 3 this week, for the last 8 months she has severely protested about her clothing. At first we assumed it was material texture but then her speech improved and I realised its the buttons!! She won't wear buttons at all whether its to do the item up or as decoration on a top. Even worse is she won't wear trousers/skirts with the elastic button fasteners on the inside to adjust the waist. So we are restricted to leggings!

She has no dx as yet but hfa is suspected. How common is this with SN kids?? And what do you do about school uniform?

Many thanks

I wouldn't worry too much about 3 yr olds and uniform. Just remove the buttons and put on velcro to fix if required.
It is also quite easy to replace on girls blouses when they get older. The style where there is a false placket - and the buttons are hidden underneath - exactly the same - replace with velcro.
DS has dyspraxia and can't do buttons. To be fair though, he is a typical lad and with him, dressing is the line of least resistance - elastic, no fastenings whatsoever etc

Dd won't wear buttons on trousers or as decoration although she will wear polo shirts for school that have buttons. She also hates any t shirts with pictures on. She also only likes very comfy clothes, no tight cuffs or tough fabrics. I do find it very frustrating as lots of things are rejected outright. It also costs more as plainer softer clothes tend to be more expensive in my experience. For school uniform I get nice soft jersey trousers from asda that are an elastic aged waist.

With the elastic inside the trousers/skirts, if you stretch it to the required length and then sew it, you can cut the buttons off. I have been doing it for years and it works well.

Dd3 prefers leggings but has worn shorts with buttons this year for the first time in about 8 years. She is fine so long as she can pull them up and down without undoing them. I have become a master at putting elastic in the waists.

If you can stretch to it mini boden and next do a few things with jogger type waist bands.

Good luckSmile

Thanks guys very helpful. Dd won't even entertain a polo shirt as its hits buttons and itches her round her neck! What a faff!

I dont know if my trick would work with your Dd chundle but I used to wash all new clothes several times and then leave them on a hanger in the living room for a while for Dd3 to get used to looking at them. Quite often [although not everytime] she would try them on when she was familiar with them.

We buy school trousers from next, they are dearer but we get a whole winter out of them, they are 100% cotton and have a stretchy waist.

No advice for the polo shirts, sorry, we just buy big and dont do the buttons up.

Thank you ineeda will def try the hangig clothes up anything worth a shot

I know an adult with a button phobia. Specifically pearly and shiny ones.

Next used to do zip up polo shirts, but have just recently stopped doing them.

Chundle · 22/08/2012 16:21

Ooh that's a good idea will like out for zipped ones

I don't like buttons either, especially if they are loose, lying on the floor or on the ground outside. I much prefer zippers. It is strange but they make me feel sick and i have no idea whatsoever why.
