Do your DC with ASD read phonetically or sight read?

DD (4, autism and s&l delay) will start reception in September. her speech is so very much behind (also her understanding) but I noticed recently that she can 'read' (recognise) quite a number of words. She is a visual learner and has a really good visual memory. I cannot really see her to learn to read phonetically iyswim.

just wondered how your DC read?

Neither, he is in yr5 & despite having a very good level of understanding we just cant find a way of helping him to recognise words/letters.
He knows all of his individual letters & sounds but cant seem to get to grips with reading/spelling/writting.

Really interested to hear how others have found it. DS1 will start Y1 in Sept. he knows loads of books, although he is very fussy. He remembers stories and rhymes especially and can recite them with or without the book there! He's in ms school and they do use phonics so he will get that but his specialist teacher, as well as the class teacher and his TA seem fairly relaxed that he may well learn through sight. I know he is capable of remembering loads of things - we all learnt car badges a year or so ago. It's something I fear I wil never forget! He doesn't show any real interest in learning to read yet but I hope that at some point he'll just 'get' why it is useful and then he'll be away...
