Would you use DLA to buy your DC a new desktop PC?

DS loves using the computer. Likes typing onto blank pages, youtube videos and some PC games which he just adores.

He has been using my laptop for about 18 months, but its dying - it keeps randomly switching off to which he gets really frustrated. I have a netbook I use for University but he doesnt like the small screen.

I dont know why I feel so guilty about using his DLA to buy a new desktop, but I just do Confused

I would too! You are spending it on your DS, so what is there to feel guilty about.

insanityscratching · 14/08/2012 13:07

Yes have bought ds a laptop, a ps3 and an ipod touch using his DLA. They are things that make his life more enjoyable and so he has them. The laptop and ps3 were replacements to gifts we had already bought him and the new ones were upgrades and replacements because he's pretty heavy handed. The ipod touch was bought to help him cope in the taxi to and from school.
If it's for ds's benefit and or enjoyment then I would feel no guilt tbh.

notactuallyme · 14/08/2012 13:10

yes. Mine goes in a separate account for him, and so far i have used it for new bed and storage in his room (colour and type specific) and a five day residential camp. I also bought a trampoline, which all of them use, but is great for burning off energy for him. I think it sounds fine.

starfishmummy · 14/08/2012 13:31

I'd just do it. It doesn't matter what you spend it on really. its intended to help with extra living/transport costs; but if there is money over for treats then why not.

Sabriel · 14/08/2012 13:50

Yes.

His DLA to benefit him, his computer.

Rumours · 14/08/2012 14:28

Yes, absolutely, we bought ds an iPad after reading in here the benefits, we've downloaded some of the autism apps and he loves it. Don't feel guilty.

ouryve · 14/08/2012 14:29

Yes! Even though DH and I have laptops, we have a desktop with a touchscreen monitor for the boys. They're a lot more robust than laptops (and knackered keyboards and mice are easier and cheaper to replace) and it's easier to keep tabs on what DS1 is up to.

FalseStartered · 14/08/2012 14:32

most certainly

if DDs award come through am considering buying a new (very quiet) vacuum cleaner with some of it as our current one scares the bejeebers out of her - can only get it out of it's hidey-hole when she's not in

Chundle · 14/08/2012 17:43

We are getting dd an iPad with hers.

False that's an amazing idea!!! Any idea what type of quiet hoovers you get??

FalseStartered · 14/08/2012 17:49

nope, but when i find one i shall shout from the roof tops! possibly in need of a life here Grin

DameEnidSpink · 14/08/2012 17:54

Yes of course you should. That money is to make life easier.

Even if you were to (for example) spend it on a family car, then that would be a valid purchase if it meant that you were able to get your DC around easier - DS cannot cope with public transport, and when scared he runs. It is safer for him to make journeys in a car rather than me having to rugby tackle someone bigger than me to stop him from getting run over.

coff33pot · 14/08/2012 20:34

Yes I would and I am going to if he is awarded DLA. DS is having one in school but needs one for home too as they are using clicker 6 and I have been invited (invited myself actually Blush to go on the course. I want to purchase it for home too so he can have homework just like everyone else plus if the day is tough then he can do whats missed at home. Well thats the plan........:)

Dont feel guilty like others have said it is for him and to make things easier for him.

False maybe that's a potential business opportunity for us mumsnetters! Design a SN friendly hoover ;)

FalseStartered · 14/08/2012 21:59

how great would it be Grin

and an autism friendly food processor, electric hand whisk, kettle and when we've conquered the domestic market we can move onto the industrial...hand dryers, road sweepers...

bochead · 15/08/2012 13:15

Chundle · 15/08/2012 14:45

the best SN friendly hoover (and floor mop) I have comeacross are the Roomba and Scooba.

They are robots, so you can set them off in another room/upstairs while you are downstairs (and vice versa), or in extreme circumstances, when you are all out of the house.

I invested in a roomba when dd1 was 3, and it really transformed my life. dd1 is ok with the hoover these days, but it is still a godsend, as I can sit with my feet up/MN/have a cuppa/read a book while doing the housework Grin. win-win.

coff33pot · 15/08/2012 21:53

I WANT a robot! Grin

Darn it forgot the lego oh and pen tops and of course its supposed to know when the floor is clean which means the thing will probably follow the poor Jack Russell all about the house and terrorise it as it sheds hairs [griin]

I just mentioned it to both DDs, DS thought it was impressive but the girls just looked at me and said "we do have arms mum one of us can hoover"..........................................Grin Grin there isnt an emoticon for major MAJOR hysterics of what they just offered to do because I immediately burst out laughing.

JackJacksmummy · 17/08/2012 20:03

First thing I'm going to purchase IF we get his dla is some heavy duty shoes! He went through 5 pairs of clarks shoes last year and we discovered buying cheaper ones was a false economy because they lasted 2 weeks max!
