Omega 3 and 6... yes that again!

That question again! Read about success of Omega 3 and 6 oil in helping ASD/ADHD kids or those lacking concentration, etc.

Also seem to remember high EPA rather than DHA being recommended generally...

So, in short, what brands best in your experience? Many thanks for your help!

I always recommend Vegepa

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 06/08/2012 09:48

My DS is happy with eyeQ which you can get in Boots in flavoured chews but many hate it's fishiness and I believe while it's high in EPA, it's not as high as vegepa.

Badvoc · 06/08/2012 12:05

My son takes vegepa

Mouth · 06/08/2012 13:15

Thanks - I'll try vegepa first I think. If he doesn't like the taste, it's game over really!

Vegepa makes 2 types - ones you swallow (and they're very easy to swallow) - and 'chewable' ones.

The chewable ones are the least fishy of any of the brands.

Badvoc · 06/08/2012 13:22

Ds1 has the chewables.
I get mine from amazon

Mouth · 06/08/2012 13:25

Just ordering now - will try orange flavour chewables first. He happily has a supermarket multivit chewable in strawberry most days so hopefully he won't mind this. It says you can pierce and add to food as well if needs be (or maybe that was the plain one). Could add to his morning porridge I imagine or yoghurt... Thanks for your advice.

My DD has been taking the EyeQ vanilla flavoured oil for 2 months and we(touch wood) have noticed a fair difference. Mainly with her speech and concentration. It's up and down obviously, but I wouldn't stop it now. Fortunately DD doesn't mind the taste too much, I tried it ONCE when I was trying to encourage her to take it herself and I nearly vommed!! I had to keep the 'see! it tastes fine!!' face on. I think I just managed to pull it offGrin

If this hadn't been a success, I would have definitely tried Vegepa though.

All I can say is, Eye Q works for us.

Whatever you try, I really wish you luck because it really can change things in a big way once you find the Omega brand which suits your child.Smile

notapizzaeater · 07/08/2012 15:56

We take eskimo oil tablets here - they are huge though !!

Noticed a difference in about 10 days ...

nickyrob17 · 07/08/2012 18:18

try out a company called nuique. they make vegan toxin free omega 3 in high doses and its not made form fish oil so it has no pcbs or mercury that fish has..

shoppingbagsundereyes · 08/08/2012 07:46

We have the vegepa chewables too. Ds doesn't like the chewy outer shell so I snip them and squeeze the stuff into juice. It kind of floats though so he hoovers it up with a straw. We do 4 capsules a day

flowwithit · 08/08/2012 20:53

We have had the mor EPA brand and they seem good. Don't know how they compare with vegepa though. Ds also takes wellkid vitamins that have a small amount of omega in them as well.
Not sure if they make any difference with ASD but his diet is limited and I worry about that so I think he needs vitamins.

Since this thread I started my daughter on EyeQ and everyone (school, family, friends etc!) have noticed a big change in her. Since going back to school her concentration is much better, doesn't seem to get distressed and just seems much happier in herself. I am so happy that I have started her on these bit unsure whether to change to Vegepa...they just seem that much more expensive! Or whether I could change her to Vegepa when I taper it down to 2 a day as at the moment a large box lasts us about 2 weeks (giving to both my children).

amibi · 19/09/2012 13:40

Don't switch if this is working for her! We use EyeQ too and we find it really helpful for DD who is 5. It's not constant and sometimes she will revert back a little, but overall I think she's come on in lots of ways since using this. If it hadn't have been as effective, I would have switched to Vegepa, but obviously we didn't need to. I would suggest you stayed with the EyeQ too.

Glad to hear another Omega sucess story!!

Catsdontcare · 19/09/2012 13:47

We use vegepa as it was the only one I could successfully get into ds! I agree that if eye q is working for you at the moment then stick with it. I know people have mixed results with different brands so it's generally about what works best for you.

clare40 · 19/09/2012 13:48

I have tried Vegepa and Eskimo, but it really didn't make any difference. I keep trying different brands, but ultimately I don't think Omega has anything to do with his possible ADHD.

osospecial · 19/09/2012 14:11

I found the vegepa chewables the best, the ordinary vegepa used to taste really fishy and I had to cut them open+mix them smoothies to try and disguise the taste. I was advised to email vegepa+ask for a free trial of the chewables and got sent some to try first. Dd liked them so we've stuck with them ever since (getting from amazon around £10 per box) dd now eats these whole with no fuss, she actually enjoys them.

amibi · 19/09/2012 14:53

oso, have you noticed a difference with your dd?

wibbleweed · 19/09/2012 16:25

Sorry to hijack - am I right in thinking from this that the vegepa chewables are those capsule things (with oil inside)? If so, they're no good for us as DS2 won't go near them. I'm on the look out for either a dry tablet style that you chew (not sure this exists for Omega 3?) or a liquid you give like medicine - as unfishy as possible? So far no luck - so if anyone has ideas I'd be most grateful

Thanks WW

Ilovecake1 · 19/09/2012 16:31

Hi WW, I know EyeQ do a liquid variety and also do different flavours..I have never tried them but just seen them on amazon!

amibi · 19/09/2012 17:39

Hi wibble. Well we use the EyeQ in vanilla flavour, but I have to be honest, we're very lucky dd takes it so well cos I took it once just out of curiosity and I nearly vommed!!Grin

One that doesn't taste so bad I think, is Eskimo oil. It's citrusy and it actually just tastes like fruity oil. I didn't really pick up any fish. For us though it was a no goer, cos dd stopped sleeping and was a complete nightmare to handle. Having said that though, I know people who swear by it and can't get on with EyeQ, so it's all about trial and error. If the number one on your list is getting it down him, then i'd definitely give the Eskimo a go first. Really hope it works for you!! I know how, when you find the one that suits, it can really help. Good luck Smile

Catsdontcare · 19/09/2012 18:46

I cut the vegepa chewables and squeeze the goo into a teaspoon of peanut butter.
