Continence Services in South Wales no longer supply pull ups?

DS 4 is currently supplied with nappies. We are moving towards toilet training and have begun to use some pull ups to encourage him to try and pull them up / dowm himself. I also find it easier sometimes to do a standing change while out and about if facilaties are limited!

I've just phoned to arrange a delivery and been told that they no longer supply pull ups only nappies (Abertawe Bro Morganwg).

Anyone have any knowledge of this policy?

Any advice?

Thanks

I am not in South Wales but under an English county but we can only have pull ups if the amount is reduced due to cost. So instead of your 5 nappies a day you can receive 2 pull ups instead. I couldn't afford to subsidise this small number so after discussion we went for a nappy at night and pads during the day which go inside normal pants and this has worked really well and is much easier to change if soiled etc

Five a day, I wish.................

I've just found the WAG guidence document on the continence service in wales for children. It makes for very interesting reading and I will be following up on many of the points in it!

how many do they limit you to?

ouryve · 01/08/2012 13:11

We've never been able to get pull ups any smaller than would fit a large adult. And still only 4 a day.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 01/08/2012 13:14

3

3 is a terrible amount :(

I wonder whether you can get pads for in the pants for younger children? I have found them much easier and they are a cheaper daytime option if you are having to pay for them yourself.

OwlLady · 01/08/2012 13:20

I will have a look for the pads for you, but have you also thought about something like this? It does depend on how much the bladder or bowel is emptied though and again, our continence service will provide these instead of disposables if they are suitable.

OwlLady · 01/08/2012 13:22

this is what I was thinking of

CwtchesAndCuddles · 01/08/2012 14:06

I hadn't thought of washable - I'll have to think about that as ds tends to have 3 -4 bowel movements a day!

I'm going to ask for an assessment with by the continence service, we've never had one since ds started getting free nappies 2 years ago! According to the guidence I read this morning he should be having regular assessments!!!

Thanks for the links - I will have a good look at products are available.

the pads are fine for bowel movements too as they do them in different sizes but do ask for an assessment as you need one so they can explain the full list of products to meet your sons needs and also they should be advising you ona toileting program, it's what they are there for! :)

Our continence service changed providers a couple of years ago and the company don't do pull ups.

We went to see the lead incontinence nurse and a rep from the company (Abena) and agreed to try their stick on pads for ds. We were initially doubtful but I have to say that we have been impressed by them. Changes when we are out are even easier as we don't have to take his trousers off - we can just whip the pad out and stick another in. He wears them with boxers or trunks which are a fairly snug fit.

He has Abri san premium in size four (he is a small 14yo, in 9-10yo clothes) - the smaller sizes have the sticky strip, but bigger ones are much bigger and don't have the sticky.

he has nappies for night time so not sure how these would be in bed!

I know starfish i was dubious about the pads too but they are much easier, no taking off of trousers, shoes etc, all changes standing up and quick. I wish it had been recommended earlier tbh. We have the bigger ones and they work very well for our situation

again we have nappies for night time as the pads wouldn't work for that and that's acknowledged by our continence service

Hi cwtches,
Only down the road in Carmarthenshire but dd (4.5) is in nappies. We are allocated 5 a day and only changed from pull-ups at the request of new school. I would certainly ask for assessments to be done if they are meant to be occurring frequently and automatically. (though dd has never had one either). Make your case and find out why Swansea have stopped supply of pull-ups, especially in case you're not able to get them to supply pads as per above.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 02/08/2012 18:30

Abertawe Bro Morganwg Health Board phoned me back today - I have requested an assessment.

They got a bit defensive when I started to refer to the guidence document I had read!!! Funny that.............

Very interesting to hear what you are getting in Carmarthen.

Hmmmm yes people get very twitchy when you start reeling off facts and figures from official WAG docs.
Good luck with assessment.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 03/08/2012 10:56

Just had a call from the Child Disability Team - apparently ds is due for a review and they had been about to call me! What a coincidence - I had just spoken to the health board....................

They have changed the order to pull ups and have made an appoinment to come out.

Oh that is fab news!!! Makes me so cross when sometimes I feel they are working against us and why can't we all work together??

FreshWest · 03/08/2012 15:43

Good news cwtches!!!!!
Pays to pester them with their own facts Grin
