Bloody disabled parking AGAIN. Can't remember the thread.

But anyway also have a question. You know if you park at a meter where it says that you can have free parking if you have a disabled car tax badge (but blue badges have to pay), does that hold even if you don't have the disabled person with you? I've always paid up to now, unless ds1 is actually with us, but was just pondering whether its being linked to benefits (ie higher rate mobility) rathee than to disability? Just wondering.

oh and that would obviously be parking in a normal space- I;m not talking about taking a disabled space.

No idea about the badge/paying issue but definitely agree about the other thread - and I don't even drive. Grrr!

zippitippitoes · 07/03/2006 10:20

I agree about the other thread too..it grates on me

getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 10:27

Normally followed by "and they get a free car you know". No "they" don't.

I suspect you are meant to pay, or at least paying would be in the spirit in which the rule is intended -although its a stupid rule because if ds1 goes out armed with a blue badge, but in dh's car, (no disabled tax disc) then we would have to pay.

Anyway- paediatrician's appointment! Must dash....

Bum. I was just about to post "bloody disabled people with their free parking and free cars..." but I won't now. Doh!

Wink
getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 10:32

Yeah bastards- shoot the lot of them!

OP posts:
coppertop · 07/03/2006 10:37

And of course most of them don't even need badges in the first place. They certainly don't look disabled.

Blue badges are handed out far too easily......

Where's a sarcastic emoticon when you need one?

SoupDragon · 07/03/2006 11:19

I have to say I am horrified by how many cars I see parked in disabled spots with no immediately visible blue badge. due to MN, I find myself looking at them everytime I walk past.

Bakajj - I seem to remember there being something about being able to use a disabled badge if the person isn't with you IF you are doing an errand on their behalf... or is that motability cars??

(Thanks for reminder - need to do disabled car tax thing!).

getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 14:32

Yep that's the actual car HITC!

have mobo car, disabled tax and blue badge
I cannot use blue badge for parking etc if my ds2 is not with me
I was told this when applying for blue badge
does this same rule apply to all areas or are some parts of the country different

getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 14:53

No the badge goes with the child (or disabled person), always. Here though they changed the rules - so you used to get free parking with a blue badge- now you don't. You only get free parking if you have a disabled tax disc- which belongs to the car, not the child iyswim. So when I buy my ticket I still have a disabled tax disc showing. Obviously you can't take a disabled space or anything, but I'm just wondering how the law stands on the parking fee. And it does piss me off that ds1 in one car would have to pay, ds1 in another car wouldn't.

I'd prob continue to pay even if officially I dind't have to becaquse I feel too guilty, but just wondered what they official position was.

buzylizy · 07/03/2006 15:20

sounds daft. My mil has a disabled badge but no car so she would have to pay!!
As for the tax disc thing that is a hard one, I kind of think if it says you don't have to pay if you have one, Don't pay(bet I would still pay) as It's not like you can take the disc of. Makes you wonder who thinks these things upAngry

desperateSCOUSEwife · 07/03/2006 16:00

didnt know that baka
what is it with these quangoes Grin

Davros · 07/03/2006 16:18

I don't have a disabled tax disc. But I know that you are not allowed to use the Blue Badge if the disabled person is not with you. I also understood that you can't, in theory, use a motability car for your own purposes but only for the disabled person. Of course this doesn't work in practice but its one reason I decided against it.

Pixel · 07/03/2006 17:07

You're allowed to use the badge if you are collecting or dropping off the badgeholder too (according to the leaflet I had) because obviously you need to be close to where they are. Of course this means that sooner or later someone will be tutting at you as you park in the disabled bay and run off at high speed to pick up offspring Sad

getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 18:45

oh yeah that's true Davros- so in theory they'd be with you. although you can use it for their benefit eg doing the shopping. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with that though. The only time we've driven a really long way without ds1 was to London, but that was for the PECS conference so I'd like to see someone argue against that :o

OP posts:
Davros · 07/03/2006 19:56

I assume you mean you CAN'T use it for their benefit? You can't do anything using the blue badge unless the disabled person is with you, you are picking them up or dropping them off or you are parking outside their home.

getbakainyourjimjams · 07/03/2006 22:36

No can- you can use your motability car without them in the car providing it is for their benefit eg food shopping, attending PECS conferences, getting my hair cut...... :o

OP posts:
buzylizy · 07/03/2006 22:38

thats good I thought I was going to have to start walkingShock

chonky · 07/03/2006 22:39

Hair cutting sounds perfectly reasonable to me :o

This thread has reminded me that I need to get our application in - arrrrgh

Davros · 07/03/2006 23:03

I thought you couldn't but I'll bow to your greater knowledge Grin But I KNOW you can't use your blue badge for things "for their benefit" although I do all the time as I got so f*cked off with getting parking tickets as the rules are so complicated I vowed I'd never pay to park around here again if I could get away with it! Blush

getbakainyourjimjams · 08/03/2006 13:45

Ha ha- now that's the answer I was hoping to see Davros :o
