Resigning - how?

Ok,not on SN but need some wise advice.

I got new job (part time) and started in April.

It means a commute to London twice a week. It is high-pressured but largely status driven, rather than having a sense of achievement. I mean it is what you are and the position you hold that seems to be the reward rather than what you do.

The post also requires political impartiality. This just doesn't mean party political stuff, but not getting publicly involved in campaigns on issues which could be construed as 'political'.

This is a very big change for me. I am a VERY political person! I feel like I've been neutered Confused

My boss is very heirarchical but not actually very good and he has been taking work I have done for him (legal advice on complicated issues) and circulating it under his own name. He also always has his eye to the main chance which means he is clearly capable of dumping me like a ton of bricks when difficult issues arise - this has already happened once.

It became very clear this week that the plan is for me to do his work while he moves on to working on other projects (unspecified).

He is of that class and that type who thinks I am his dogsbody. But I am an experienced lawyer with a PhD - I am not 'The Help'.

I want to resign so I can focus on my freelance work, be mouthy and political and be myself again. Torch Grin Torch

Yes, I will lose a regular salary which was nice but I still have some freelance work.

The question is: I am now on hols for two weeks. Do I wait to tell him when I come back or give advance notice by email now? If I wait, I am still working from home when I return until the end of the month (and he is on hols) so I wouldn't get the chance to speak to him face to face until the end of Aug.

Preposterously I have to give 3 months notice even though I am on probation so this would mean a big delay.

What would you do in terms of resigning? I know email is not great but it gives him some warning.

Isn't there an old saying don't put till tomorrow what you can do today.
Two caveats off course..

  1. doing it by email is not the norm in your Proffession
  2. if you are concerned what his reaction might be after finding that you have resigned AND there are going to be any future ramifications for you, then you might want to do it face to face so you can do some damage limitation.

If none of the above, then you might as well do it now.

Thanks guys. I really want to have time to focus on getting a blog up and running and doing some campaigning work.

Can see why you don't want to feel constrained by this role.I would call him tomorrow to advise and then send the official notification by e-mail and post. You've covered all bases then and don't need to have any further delay. You can then enjoy your hols feeling relieved and not stressing about it. Good luck!

I agree that a formal resignation in writing ASAP is the appropriate way to go.
Whether you do it by email or by letter is something only you can judge.

Thanks. It has been a strain travelling back and forth - even though it is nice to be in London. But pomp and definitely pomposity is really not for me.

Keeping my mouth shut is definitely not for me but you don't realise until you are in a politically sensitive role how it will play out in practice.

I just feel that fighting the system alone is a mug's game but spreading what I know and informing people and campaigning on issues will hopefully at least make a small contribution to challenging this defunct system.

How did it go AE?

appropriatelyemployed · 30/07/2012 19:18

Thanks coff33pot for remembering! I have been so busy working on my freelance stuff, trying to get someone to advise on a judicial review of the LGO and packing today, that I have done nothing about it!

I am going to wait till tomorrow morning before I set off for camping!!
