Should I get ds checked ?

Have posted here about dd4 before , and you were loads of help .
She's been dx with asd / gdd/ ect ... She also has a growth problem, that's never been pinpointed, but put down to her dietary issues ( sensory thing with food ) . She is now taller than her twin. Shock .

But I've got a query about her twin , and I'm wondering if anyone could suggest something ?

I've got an inkling that something isn't quite right with ds4 . He's very bright , but it's his height & head size that bothers me . He's very short and has a large head . He has always had a big head .

I can't buy him round necked tops that fit his body as his head is too big to fit through . It got me wondering why he has a large head .

DS will be 7 on Monday Grin
He has normal features .
His head has circumference of 54.5 cm
His height is 105 cm
His weight is 3 stone
His arms and legs are a little short for his body ( but not really short , I have to shorten his clothes or dress him in shorts and short sleeves for things to fit properly ) .
His feet are quite wide but small , as are his hands .

Dh is 5foot 3 , his mother must be about 4 foot 9 or 10 ? ( she only comes up to my shoulder and I'm 5'11/2 )

Mil has a large head too .

My gut instinct is telling me to take him to the docs and get them to investigate , but having dd there a lot , I don't want to be looking like a hysterical mother iykwim ? .

I wouldn't worry about arms and legs. My DS has tiny tiny legs. As does my dad and my uncle Smile

both my girls have dx of autism, so we saw a genetic specialist. He was very clear that dismorthic features need looking at. I havent seen your soon but might be worth asking the GP.
Both my girls have large heads but did grow into them at about 5

It's not normal for a 7 year old to have such a large head in proportion to the rest of him is it ?

His head is bigger than mine .
Hmm

His head is 99th percentile , the rest of him ( height / weight) is around the 25th ,(usually just under) .

No not the head I was talking about the arms and legs. If you're worried get him checked. The worst they can do is think you're overly cautious. They'll be used to worse than that though.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 26/07/2012 13:30

Always get things checked if you are concerned. The worst that will happen is that they'll think you are a slightly over anxious mum. So what?! It may just be a family genetic thing and nothing to worry about, but these things are always worth checking.

My DS, only 19 months, has a similar shape. Hasn't been measured or weighed lately but I imagine he's still on 25th for height, 50th for weight and hovering around 91st+ for head circumference. Also very small, wide feet.

He was born tiny and his head growth was really rapid - he had a head scan and it showed no problems. I think it's evened out since then.

DH's family all have big heads. DH had a very big head at birth. We are all a small family, too.

I know quite a few boys with big heads - bigger on the charts than the rest of them.

But what is it that you think 'isn't quite right with your DS?'

puresweetie · 26/07/2012 14:46

Ps - DH (who apparently DS is very much like in terms of shape etc) was REALLY small until he was about 11. His mum was worried about his height - but then he shot up. He's now 5ft 8, arms are definitely a bit short (I remember noticing this on our first date Grin, head is still big and he's 5ft 8" - but he looks perfectly proportioned and you'd never think anything about it.

Neither he nor DS have any issues etc etc

It's his head size that bothers me , because it bothers ds ( I know he's going to be a tiny man like his dad , there is no way he will be over 5'4 ).

He gets a bit annoyed when he's given clothes ( grandparents) that he can't get over his head .
Took him shopping the other week and his little face fell as he couldn't get the stuff he likes ( round neck games character t shirts ) .

He also ask why his head is bigger ? .Hmm .

Dd4 has also developed a habit of saying big head repeatedly ( echolia) , not good when ds is a bit sensitive as it is . DS likes his hair cut really really short as he thinks it makes his head smaller .

I'm hoping he grows into his head size , but if he does he'd be much bigger than dh and I !

Given it's bothering you and him, definitely worth a trip to the GP at the very least.

mariammariam · 27/07/2012 23:35

If you think they'll dismiss you as deluded, get that bit our if the way early. Say you might be, and can they help make aure thats the oy problem. Even the mos oldschool GP, doesn't want to miss aomething. The red book centile charts are good for showing we needed them.

Lougle · 27/07/2012 23:43

I've found this study here which puts the mean head circumference for a boy of 7 at 53.26 cm with a Standard Deviation of 1.51, which means that any measurement between 51.75cm and 54.77cm is 'normal', I think.

Lougle · 27/07/2012 23:44

Hmm..that was a 1985 study Shock

droves · 28/07/2012 11:02

Lougle , thank you for the link .

Intresting that the Aberdeen children had bigger heads than the London children. Hmm . Must be a Scottish characteristic ?

It's reassuring that Ds must fall into the " normal head size" .
But it doesn't address the proportional differences between his head size and his height / weight ?

I'd say..get im checked out..you have nothing to lose:)
Having said that it does sound like those are simply his proportions and he may grown into his head!
My Ds1 was pretty much identical.. huge head (the docs did send him for checks!) and body under 25 centile. We had to cut extra openings in tops, sweatshirts and hoodies when he was smaller. Alos my DH's side of the family are very short (Grandad 5 ft 1) and I assumed DS1 would just be the same.

Somewhere between the ages of 7 and 10 he started to even out.. he got taller and thinner and he looked more in proportion. He's 19 now and his head looks perfectly normal. It's a big head sure..he had to have a massive crash helmet when he got his moped.. but he looks typical..and to our amazement he has also reached an adult height of 5 ft 9! He's never going to be a tall man but he has exceeded everyone's expectations:)
