Ds is 6 with asd.
It's not unknown for a week to pass without a poo, but this is the longest.
Been dosing him with lactulose since Thursday. He's had 35ml today.
He is otherwise ok in himself. No pain. Not eating much mind you, though drinking lots.
I will take him to docs tomorrow if nothing happens, but just wondering if anyone had any advice or knowledge they would like to impart!
Thanks.

My dd has glycerine suppositories or bisacodyl suppositories, the glycerine suppositories aren't quite as quick but they are OTC. I think NICE now only recommends Movicol, but it doesn't work for dd. All the usual food things, orange juice, pears, prunes/dates/dried apricots, olive oil, golden linseed. Constipation is awful, dd was on strong painkillers whilst she cleared out after a nasty bout. Hope you see some movement soon!

I second glycerine suppositories..get them in Boots...they usually work in about 20 mins.. moisten..pop one in and get him to lie on his left side (with something to amuse him) for as long as possible..then bingo!

Long term Movicol might work better for him..it doesn't for everyone but my DS2 is on it and it keeps things ticking over usually.

Docs tend to like to persist with laculose/movicol type treatments, but if he has been bunged up for 2 weeks I'd be wanting to unblock him from the bottom end and then softening up from the top.

I have found that once you go that long, even a suppository will only do part of the job... dd has frequent problems with this, and when it gets really bad, before we use a supp, I will take a cotton swab covered with petrolatum jelly and just "lubricate" the area. It seems to help get the mass that has formed moving, then the dam bursts and we are cleaned out until the next go. For her, however, it all collects in the rectal vault, so to use a supp has little to no effect because there is a mass of stool right there blocking its effectiveness.

If you can get benefibre (and if your ds drinks sufficient amounts) a teaspoon a day can help keep things soft enough to keep things moving a little more regularly. If, however, ds doesn't drink much, it can actually make matters worse, so use it with that warning in mind...

I have been reminded about when I had to use suppositories for ds. His community nurse suggested getting something with a mild local anesthetic from the pharmacy and smearing that around first so that it deadened the pain of the suppository going in. I think we ended up with anbesol gel (its for toothache/mouth ulcers).
We have also used instillagel which is a numbing and lubricating gel - ds has it on prescription (for changing his gastrostomy button) - not sure if it is available over the counter.
