Headaches and Omega 3 supplements. Are they common?

Hello

DD(5) has been taking Eye Q for nearly 2 months now and we've seen some really positive results. Her speech, concentration and just general behaviour improved quite significantly(hope i'm not speaking too soon) However, she complains quite reguarly of having headaches, specifically around her forehead. They're not bad enough where she has to have medication, but nevertheless, I don't like the idea of her having regular headaches.

I started taking regular omega 3 1000mg capsules and I had to stop taking them because I was getting daily headaches, so it obviously runs in the family.

So i'm not really sure what to do. Could this just be her body getting used to the oils, or should I stop it altogether?

I find it puzzling that it's always isolated to her forehead.

Could anyone shed some light on this please?

Thanks for reading.

I've never heard of this.

Do you think you should try switching to another brand?

causeforanamechange · 16/07/2012 13:46

Well i'm reluctant because of the positive effects that it's having. If she was really suffering with them then obviously i'd have no choice but to stop and switch. She tends to just say it once or twice, but carries on as normal and doesn't seem stressed atall. It must just be a bit of a niggle, but i'm wondering if it could be that parts of her brain are being activated, which haven't been before. I hope that doesn't sound completely stupidConfused I have no idea really, i'm just speculating.

She's tried Eskimo oil(adult one) and she had a really bad reaction to that so we stopped that pretty quickly. She couldn't sleep, was having terrible nightmares and was just irratable and not herself.

I'm not sure if it's the brand itself that's giving her the headaches, or purely the Omega, because like I say, I tried a bog standard omega 3 and I got terrible headaches, so i'm not sure it's anything to do with Eye Q...............

I meant to say- i'm wondering if it could be parts of her brain being activated..............

Parts of My kids brains certainly have been activated by various things. And it hasn't given them a headache.

It's made them stressed or angry or able to function better....

But then I guess it's possible it did give them a headache and they didn't complain.....

causeforanamechange · 16/07/2012 15:52

Hmmm, not really sure what to do.

What would you do? I know you've got loads of experience with supplements Indigo, so i'd trust your judgement.

I really not qualified in any way to tell you about supplements. I'm talking purely as a parent.

I wouldn't give my child something that gave them a headache.

There are loads and loads of brands of omega. I would try another one and then decide what to do long term. As you probably know I always recommend vegepa. But of course there are many other brands.

Alternatively you could halve her dose and see what happens.....

How much omega (EPA and DHA) is she currently taking?

ouryve · 16/07/2012 16:18

I get that sort of headache from eating oily fish, so it's a possibility.

causeforanamechange · 16/07/2012 16:31

Thanks Indigo. I was only looking for an opinion and obviously appreciate that you're not an expert.

Of course I don't want to be giving her something which makes her feel poorly, but because it doesn't seem to bother her and i've not had to give her calpol i'm assuming it's very very mild and so that's why i'm wondering whether I should perservere with it before possibly deciding to change.

The EPA overall is 558mg and the DHA is174mg. This is the maximum dose of 15 mils a day. When I dropped in down, I noticed a drop in her concentration and her speech went back to the way it was before, so I quickly upped it. The Omega 3 altogether is 2400mg.

I think I wouldn't be so reluctant to swap if it weren't for her bad reaction to Eskimo. I can't work out what it could have been in that that she had a reaction to. It's purer than Eye Q and overall, has much better reviews. Maybe it's because it wasn't spread out throughout the day like you are adviced to do with Eye Q???.......

I heard from you and a few others that the EPA was more beneficial to children with issues like my DD so I was happy with the ratio. I've just had a look at the Eskimo oil(which I kept just incase) and was EPA 750mg and DHA 500mg, so whereas the EPA is higher, the ratio seems a bit off to me.

ouryve, so do you mean your oily fish induced headaches are isolated to your forehead? It's strange isn't it. I wonder what it is...

bassingtonffrench · 16/07/2012 19:50

eye Q here and no headaches, though I'm not sure he'd tell me

causeforanamechange · 17/07/2012 09:01

bassington, do you find Eye Q has been beneficial for your ds? Did he have any side effects atall?

OP posts:
mrsbaffled · 17/07/2012 12:10

We give Eye Q and no side effects here (apart from saying 'yuk'!).

DS has made huge progress with writing and behaviour, but we started it at the same time as starting vision therapy, so it's hard to separate the effects. TBH I think the VT has been the biggest influence (in particular the Retained Reflex part).

causeforanamechange · 17/07/2012 13:51

Oh actually I think I remember talking to you about it before mrsbaffled. I've not actually heard of vision therapy. Would you mind explaining what it is? Does your ds have problems with speech atall? If yes, did you see an improvement using the Eye Q with this? That's one of the main things which is holding my dd back and what is keeping her behind, socially.

No, no speech problems - in fact he was exceptionally early and good with talking.

DS has problems with writing at school and on a hunch I took him for a specialist eye test. A high street optician had missed a significant eyetracking problem 3 times, but it was picked up instantly at a Behaviour Optometrist (google BABO to find one). BOs treat more than just the actual sight, they check things such as the eye movement and whether they work together. They also do colorimetry testing - to see if you need coloured lenses to see better. They specilise in vision and dyslexia/dyspraxia/ASD etc.

The Vision Therapy aims to cure any vision problems. DS took 4 -5 months and his eye tracking is age-appropriate now - so he's cured!

What they did was a course of retained reflex therapy (gross motor exercises mostly) first followed later by actual eye exercises. DS had retained primitive reflexes and they stopped his eye tracking developing normally. Once they were gone his eyes caught up! The RRT has improved his coordination and he's much much less fidgetty and generally calmer (on the whole LOL!)
