DS 5, ASD and in an assessment unit. We've seen, and other people make comments,including school, that he's made so much progress in the last year-his speech, compliance,interaction with others, actually holding a pencil correctly,tracing over lines,writing his name freehand, sharing books,sequencing and recognising numbers up to 20-but we get EP's written report and everything is scored in 1st percentile and looks so negative. Things he can do, but didn't do for EP. It does actually recognise that DS didn't understand his instructions and probably has more cognitive development than DS showed to him, but fuck it hurts to read that report and seems he's made no progess.

I know what you mean when you see it all written down in black and whiteSad,
but as you say your DS HAS made progress in the last year. The EP report is a snapshot of where he was on the day EP visited. When you get later reorts they will show different things and you will be able to track progress.

Hold onto the positives. Take the report and use it to target help and then look back later and see that pin-pointing X and Y then targetting them has made a difference to your DS.

I'm not dismissing your hurt just trying to help you find a positive in it all.

Centiles are bloody cruel. It's shoving where they are compared to NT in your face. Useful to know when trying to get support, but hard reading.

Good advice given to me was just compare them to themselves! So in 6 months have they made progress? If they are delayed they may make slower progress than average, and may take a long while to catch up, but so long as they are making progress, that's what counts. Obviously 6 months progress in 6 months is fantastic, 9 months better, but even 3 months progress is still progress. ((((hugs))))

Yes it hurts but now you put it back in the envelope and never compare with any other child and just celebrate your own childs acheivements because he is going to get there and make loads of them :)

yea...seeing things in black and white is always so hard...even when you know what it's going to say...it's hard every time...especially where your DC is at by comparisons....it shouldn't be the remit or reference but it always has this running through reports to some degree...

Agree with coff33pot ...thats what counts and thats where you focus xx

Thanks, for the kind and sensible words from you lovely ladies. I can see what you're all saying now,now the tears have stopped. Yes onwards and upwards with little Rinky's geat progress and a big turd on percentiles. Grin

My ds had a weak report when he was just turned 7 , no good news really. Roll forward 4 years and he had a completely different set of results with weaknesses in just processing. He was recently diagnosed with Hfa and I do believe that his results 4 years ago were impacted more by his Asd than now and that the Ep wasn't able to tap into his abilities at the time. I think with Asd children iq testing can produce quite inaccurate results especially early on. Your ds is still very young and a lot can change over the next few years

I know how you feel. I've just had my ASD 6 year old's school report. He scored zero in the phonics test and is below average for everything. He can barely write his name :(
