Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

What's the point?!

Just got back from meeting with Ep, after she spent some time with dd.

Isn't it bloody typical that dd is very excited for her Y6 leavers performance and disco!!

Anyway, I'm disappointed but wondering if I need to just leave all assessments alone now.

She saw that dd is only really interested in herself.

She noticed her immaturity.

She told me dd told her things we do in the summer each year - which weren't true?!?! Hmm

She did say that she noticed she was anxious as she picked her hair while she was in there.

However, she said nothing jumped out but girls do act differently to boys (really?!). She also said that dd probably won't get a dx but she'll but her on pathway.

Ok I'm very confused now Confused

Huh? An EP can't DX, they may spot traits but they can't DX, they aren't qualified to. Their job is to assess your DDs educational difficulties and help the school with suggested strategies. This 'pathway,' what's that about? Is this to get her support from autism specific advisory teachers or outreach? Does your DD get any support at school ATM, sorry can't remember. Were you considering statutory assessment?

littlelegsmum · 12/07/2012 20:22

Oh can they not. Ahhhh, right. Well I'm not sure what her report will be saying. I don't think it'll be in dds favour anyway.

The pathway must be part of the 'system' in the area and a variety of professionals get to see dd. ie paed, camhs, Ep, etc and it's various people that possibly come up with a dx. She doesn't seem to think dd will even get dx though, so what's the point?!

I was thinking of asking for SA but not sure if it's worth it and we just don't have the money to appeal etc. dd has had a full cognitive assessment, which Ep is happy to use details from. However dd gets no support at school and it seems that unless she gets all 3's in her y6 sats she'll go in
A class with no support - this includes if even 1 level 4 mark.

I don't know what to do as I asked her what happens about school and she didn't suggest anything other than what they may offer.

Sorry if I sound negative.

Oh dear, littlelegs. Who suggested the EP get involved, her primary school? Have you seen the SENCo at secondary? I guess your DD is on SA plus as the EP has seen her? Secondaries can be better than primaries as at least they have more experience with SEN. The transition can be tricky, though. Do you think your DD should get some sort of DX?

littlelegsmum · 12/07/2012 20:43

To be honest, she desperately needs support in some areas. Especially her childish ways, anxieties, getting involved in telling off people at school, she has mild dyslexia and s&l difficulties.

There is so much support for her and they've already marked her as vulnerable but she has to get level 3's and should get them - unless there is some dodgy marking going on!

You should get her results tomorrow or early next week. If her needs are more social than academic, it seems wrong that support relies on her struggling academically. Have you had this in writing? Here's hoping she has all 3s!

Don't be put off applying for a statement for her if you think she needs it. Tribunal doesn't need to cost you anything other than some postage and lots of photocopying, plus lots of your time.

As for the diagnosis....the first EP who saw DD went off on a tangent about something else (that she was right about) and more or less dismissed me when I asked about ASD as a possibility. We then went via the GP for the ASD referral and DD was described as a textbook case by the consultant and team who subsequently gave her a diagnosis of ASD.

Overall trust your instincts about her needs and where you should go. Don't let people tell you she isn't bad enough, you won't get a diagnosis etc.

I didn't get anything in writing from the high school saying that. However, the pp lady who came with me wrote notes. The high school have said based on her may teachers assessments she should be put in the lower groups with lots of support. She masks the (possible As) very well. However, I think she will be thrown by high school and it's not necessarily a positive throw!

Thank you beautiful. I know that she has got needs, and some of them have clearly affected her educationally and with her difficulties, I see it only getting worse. My hubby, who is quite laid back and leaves decisions to me, is dreading this move and we worry about her all the time - especially as she's so unaware and thinks every bodies intentions are good!

Just remembered, sorry! The EP also said she seemed to care for someone going through a hard time at home - uncle had died - and she had eye contact. Does those really rule out as/asd?

you need referrals to salt, camhs, for assessments for asd, communication, everything....
GP or school should be doing this at your requests....if you have an EP involved...was it school who asked for this? What are the area's perceived by school to be investigated?....I'm a bit confused you are seeing an EP but school are not referring for assessments....
Maybe appt with school to clarify issues/difficulties, what area's are causing greatest difficulties..and your own observations/difficulties at home etc...what will school be doing to address these things? are they in agreement that assessments needed?...if they don't seem forthcoming...go straight to GP yourselves and request.
eye contact is not a disqualifier for asd...

Apologies for the delay in responding. I needed some time out (very stressed)

I have all the appropriate referrals and the appointments are coming through -generally for August.

DD has only been at the school for 12 months and they don't want to get involved. Therefore have been denying DD has any troubles. I have had to push as I can see the difference in DD to her peers growing bigger.

I have managed to get DD referrals to:

LASC - Language and Social Communications Team
CAMHS
SALT
EP

DD had been off school, at least once a week for the past month because of her anxieties yet school are feeding em by sending her home as soon as she gets worried.

Luckily High School have put some things in place - I just hope it enough.
