Am considering all my options. Had bleak day today and am just thinking with a statement in place, how many hours can I fight for if DS is unable to cope in any school or PRU?

Any advice? xx

how old is DS?

I keep Interhigh in my back pocket as a secondary option www.interhigh.co.uk/ - it covers far more of the NC than most homee tutor provision. The key exceptions to a "normal" school day being music, art and design technology - all of which could be catered for by a bit of creativity iykwwim. I just cannot for the life of me see DS coping in any of the local secondaries & the ASD units are for far lower functioning children to be fair. (KS1 was an experience I've vowed to myself will never be repeated)

For primary a subscription to mathswhizz or mathletics for golden oldie parents to ensure their child keeps up with the newfangled methods & ambleside online should cover the 3R's Wink If you need it I can give you the full list of curriculum resources I used to home educate for the odd term or so. I'd just need a day to dig it out of my archive. Most resources were free or low cost.

Personally I'd start the battle by asking for equiv to full time hours and let the barstewards whittle me down in terms of home tutor provision. I'd also take a really good look at the independent sector (it's suprising what's out there once U start looking!).

yes I would go for full time also. My DS started with so mins per day and we have built up to 9 hours per week. The home tutor is also working the school holidays. Then Sept the hours will up again. HTH x

Thanks bochead, DS is 13. Bright, brilliant at computer programming but really unable to access school. Had a lightbulb moment this week that I just can not see him going to any of the ASD units or mainstream and really worryingly there are no independent schools within travelling distance.

And it hit me hard but need to know what I can fight for. Thank you for that info, going to look it up.

Oh deviant tutor working the holidays! That would be great for DS. Know it's been a long struggle, ongoing for your DS getting support but that is very interesting. x

Interhigh in the mornings, + a couple of afternoons doing an OU intro to programming course/local college IT course & a couple of afternoons doing some sort of social skills?

The aim of the social skills side of things being to equip him for adult life - I'd expect salt/cahms etc to take a lead on this part. Perhaps some real sensory intergration therapy if relevant etc. I'd also expect LA to pay any fees + books and exams fees etc for Interhigh & OU Wink.

Thank you bochead! Going to keep all this info, think I need to think more along these lines. Could work. x

your ds has a statement doesn't he? he is entitled to a F/T education that meets his needs
we hit the discovery channel hard when ds was out of school!

Hi cormsilkye we have a rather naff proposed statement at moment! Got a meeting with LEA Tuesday.

It is awful tbh but have got my response to it almost sorted. Am still struggling at moment with the whole 'thinking out of the box thing' but DS is unique and maybe I should stop trying to stuff him into a 'hole' he doesn't fit.

Fulltime within the constraints of how well he is able to manage it while unwell.

We were up to about 11 hours per week at the peak.

The min is 5 hours but the guidance states that this should be increased when a child is facing public examinations (which I took to be the 2 GCSE years).

Obviously they can't teach Science at home with no lab so I enrolled DS privately in a distance learning GCSE Science (great fun doing experiments in the kitchen!)

It's all down to what tutors they have available at the time in which subjects. DS was studying French and Spanish - but LA couldn't provide tutors in those subjects. So at home with the tutors he basically did, English, Maths, Art, ICT.

cormsilkye · 12/07/2012 00:10

yes you're quite right wet. I wouldn't have wanted my ds's tutor to do any more than she actually did TBH as she was very limited in her access to resources.

starfish71 · 12/07/2012 00:31

Thanks wet, yes it is all what DS is capable of dealing with. Sorry am not in a good place at moment but truly believe I will get this right for him. Just need a bit of support and hand holding while I do it.

Thank you, really helped me tonight x
