ASD DS comes home from school with entry form for Olympic ticket draw. He has been asking to go to a football match at Wembley for months - we have said 'no' as it s too expensive AND we are afraid he will bolt becos of the noise / crowds. Anyway one of the events available is football @Wembley and he is desperate to enter
Criteria for entry into the draw are
95% attendance - he has been geniuinely ill more than 5% of days
exellent behaviour - problematic due to SEN
demonstrated respect, excellence and friendship - again difficult for him due to SEN - friendship with ASD? Excellence in any SEN child at the school?

...am I out of order to query this?

(name change isn't to hide from you guys - but my child's school is possibly recognisable from the above...)

Do you have to meet all or any of those criteria?

0800900 · 06/07/2012 20:29

ah good point - to my reading, it is ALL of them -it says "in order for your chld to qualify the following criteria need to be met:" - and then lists them - so I thought it was all - but that might be my 'loophole'...ie they can include him wthout losing face it suddenly becomes "any..." of the followng (though even then my ds would struggle!) - but it wouldn't exclude children who have sen but have attended school...

Surely the 'loophole' is that reasonable adjustment should be made for his SEN?

TheLightPassenger · 06/07/2012 20:45

Have they given entry forms to children who aren't going to "qualify" Shock.

Agree re:reasonable adjustment. And Hmm at friendship being a criteria, surely respect for others is more appropriate.

apparently everyone got forms, but the teacher promptly took one away from a girl in his class as she said she was going to be at her nan's during the Olympics! hope her nan doesn't live in Stratford ;) I s'pose they think that if it is going to be an incentive, they need to give it to the naughty ones too, to encourage them to do better next year? maybe?

IMO whether NT or SEN, if they gave it to a child knowing their attendance was below par, knowing that their behaviour has not been excellent etc etc and THEN say they cant participate then that is nasty and wrong to single them out like that. Behaviour should to me be dealt with as and when it occurs. Not some random day it is up to the parent to point out why their child cant join in when they bring the letter home which could well have been an excellent day at school.

IF they gave out the letter with say a timescale for improvements, say......for the next 4 weeks attendance should be blah blah blah, and a target for SEN to aim for maybe then that would be acceptable to me as a parent.

In fairness, I suppose they had to send the letter to everybody - otherwise people whose children weren't eligible would complain that they weren't even told that olympic tickets were available [ or should that be unavailable if your child is BAD or STUPID or NOT VERY NICE or ILL :) ] That'll learn us to be better parents.
I bet illness didn't even cross their mind - but in away it is the thoughtlessness that is the problem rather than any intention to be cruel.

This doesn't sound like they have thought it out properly at all. IMHO they should let everyone enter if they want to. There are "discreet" ways of making sure a person doesn't win if they want to go down that line - not that I think they should, just sayin'.

0800etc · 09/07/2012 16:37

just thought I'd update you as i have to take it all back - lol

I went into school this morning with my selfrighteous knickers on - and was politely told, that OF COURSE allowances are made for children like my dc - I think the poor woman had to restrain herself from saying ..."like duhh???"

Just have to hope he doesn't ACTUALLY get picked now ;) as I don't think he really appreciates how noisy / crowded etc it is going to be. It would SO serve me right if he was though!

coff33pot · 09/07/2012 18:46

Oh that is good! I am glad he can enter.

Be prepared to buy those ear defenders just incase Grin

TheLightPassenger · 09/07/2012 19:09
