We have a DX

Just wnated to thank all the lovely people here who answered my questions about the DISCO.

Thanks to you OH and I were well prepared and the upshot is that we have a DX of Autistic Spectrum Disorder with a note of Aspergers (our Paed is following new diagnostic criteria I think she said but wnated to say Aspergers so DS could access some specific services).

She referred us to CAMHS for a post DX session but they have rejected us based on a list of 9 things he is unlikely to suffer from......

The DX won't change much - I was pretty much proceeding as if he was as the strategies I read about seem to help...... BUT it does mean it is on file at school - they were already being really helpful anyway so when he gets the mean shouty man in Y6 (thinking long term here!) I can tell him to stuff his shouting up his jumper!

Compared to some of you we seem to have emerged relatively unscathed and I am eternally grateful for that. My heart goes out to you when I read of the struggles some of you have.

Thank you for all your help and support.

That's good news, never. (Well, you know what I mean.) If you get surprisingly tearful in a few days or months time, we'll still be here for ((((hugs)))).

Ah, well done to you. Sorry and congratulations. Hope that it helps your DS and family.

Thank you both.
EllenJaneisnotmyname - I've had a few tearful moments actually, usually when telling people who were rooting for us to get the DX.

I am so certain it will help us to help DS be the best he can be. I am currently buying up all stock of Can I Tell You About Aspergers Syndrome for my Mum, the PILs..... Would it be wrong to give a copy to DS's next teacher? His current one is fantastic but I've heard that the next one is a bit 'shouty'..... DS and shouty do not go well together - he just shouts back! The only ones not getting the book are my Dad and his Partner as they are fantastic with DS, so accepting and accomodating.

Good to hear that you have the Dx. Sorry that you have to have it though if you see what I mean.
I gave DS's teacher and TA that book too - I think they found it useful at first.
It was a good starting point.

I know what you mean about Shouty people DS is like that too ( and he shouts back at me when I loose it with him Blush) so better they understand at school before he gets to that particular teacher, if the teacher is still there by that point of course.

Really glad things went well for you and that you can now insist that your DS gets the right kind of support.

Hopefully shouty man will be moved into another year group before your Ds gets him. Dd3 would be terrified if someone at school shouted at herSad

Good luckSmile

I'm glad that you got to dx you were looking for to get him the support.

DS got the same dx a couple of months ago even using the same way of writing it. Must be the new thing. She was pleased as lots of people minimise AS compared to ASD so it gives us the option to use either.

I am glad for you that you have finally got a dx and can now move on. Also glad it went smoothly for you :) x
