I've been to the GP about my son this week...

I suspect that he has (mild?) dyspraxia/DCD. He's nearly 14.

I went with a bit of a laundry list of issues dating back to when he was quite small. I feel a bit bad for not going sooner because some of the things date back to when he was a toddler. But in isolation, the individual observations are 'nothing', it's just when they are put together that it paints a particular picture.

She's going to refer him to community paeds/OT.

What happens next?

I'd really appreciate hearing from others who've been through this. I don't know what the assessment is, or what happens.

Thanks.

:) You've taken the best and hardest step of going to the GP, don't be hard on yourself that you haven't been before.

DS was referred to a community paed and OT when he was a lot younger than your son but I would imagine that the format would be similar, just maybe different skills being tested.
They both (but especially the community paed) asked lots and lots of questions about his past.
The OTs were fab. They looked at lots of things - could he walk in a straight line, hop, write, use cutlery etc etc. They realised that in my son's case it was a complete of lack of self esteem that was causing his OT issues (e.g. he has autism and the school had said "You can't write" so he took it as he couldn't write, so he wouldn't). They put him into group therapy with one to one care inside the group, specially choosing the group so he would be the 'best' child there, taught him how to throw, catch, exercises to improve core muscles and fine muscle control, use cutlery.
