For those of you with minimal or non-verbal DCs; what do you have written in their communication diary by the school setting?

Depends on the day! I am both the recipient (DS in SS) and a writer (TA in SS!)
If a child was non verbal I would include what they did (in brief, not an essay Grin) eg 'Jo counted to three in maths today!' also what they had for lunch, if bowels open (for those in nappies or with bowel worries) and any highlights..anything they enjoyed or if they were particularly happy or a bit quieter than usual. Reminders for anything (PE kit tomorrow please just incase it stops raining...')
Any off the cuff visits , say if the OT popped in ..they would then usually add their own note too.

That's a good day (we have 9 in class) A hectic day would just be what they ate and what sort of day they had overall!!

On the other hand one of my ds1's teachers just used to write 'good day!' unless something significant had happened!!

It varies greatly, but unfortunately it more often than not says 'little bluebus has had a good day' - which doesn't really tell me a lot (especially as she does not have any behaviour issues - so a 'bad' day would mean she had been ill - in which case they would have phoned me anyway!!!!
Sometimes get a sentence about an activity she has done in the morning - but often nothing about the afternoon as they are obviously too rushed at the end of the day.
Had a supply teacher for 2 weeks before Easter, who managed to write chapter and verse about the day's activities !!!

I only write in the book if there is something important they need to know about DD. Eg - appointments, or if she has had an unsettled night etc

We have an A5 sheet with widget symbols for different activities at preschool eg, sand, water, outside play, construction, fee play, circle time....

We highlight the activities that the child has taken part in and at the bottom it has a smiley face, straight face and sad face for the session and for snacktime or lunch time so we can highlight what sort of day the child has had. Then we stick it in the book.

We also write notes about special achievements, trips, what they ate etc.

Parents hardly ever write back though Sad

I might be able to scan you one and email it to you but I am going away early next week so it wont be until I get back or maybe after we break up for the summer.

It wouldnt be relevant for a school age child but at least it would give you an idea.

Pm me your email address if you likeSmile
