Threading toys

Hi everyone

I wondered if anyone has found a really good threading toy? I'm after one for my DS1 aged 3.8 with development delay.

Ideally I need to start with a stiff cord and large holes to thread through and then move him on gradually. Does anyone know if such a kit exists? Googling only seems to find pretty bead and laces type toys that he wouldn't yet be able to access. Portage had loads of things to thread but has sadly finished, we have no toy library locally. I would try to make my own from bits and bobs but frankly at the moment I don't have the time or energy. Any idea where I could buy/beg/borrow one from?

Thanks

you can buy threading bits in elc, like cotton reels and big buttons but use pipe cleaners to thread instead of string, most craft shops sell them. Or something like this maybe?

Thanks. Think I'm going to have to make my own collection of bits as you suggest. The lacing toys look great but we're only just moving on from washing line and curtain rings so they'd be far too tricky at present. Cotton reels are a good idea I'd not thought of.

Thanks again

Search for cotton reels on amazon (in Toys) and a good lot of stuff comes up incl cheap reels and giant beads

hanbee · 03/07/2012 19:38

Thanks again. The reels on amazon look really good and large enough for me not to have to worry about him mouthing them. I like the buttons in there too as they have potential for other play: stacking, posting, pretend money, colours etc.

Zzzz - I found some pipe cleaners Envyn my craft box and gave them a try, worked really well so thanks for the tip.

Would dried pasta be any good for this? I was thinking penne or rigatoni.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 03/07/2012 23:14

a bit expensive though

hazeyjane · 04/07/2012 10:04

How about these and these?

hanbee · 04/07/2012 20:53

Sadly the items on eBay had ended by the time I looked Hazey but will have another search on there.

The hope education stuff is a bit too pricey for me, though it looks good.

I seem to remember making things by threading painted macaroni as a child, would work great but DS1 still mouths everything and I can just imagine the mess!
