Toilet Training/ASD - coping with family days out

Hi There
DS2 is 5 now, we've been toilet training since January sigh

He does pretty well, but is inconsistent, especially with no 2's. He does well in school (clean and dry 80% of the time), not so good at home.

What I wanted to ask is, how did you all manage this period as regards family days out, etc?

We're going on hols to France on the ferry in Aug, and you can imagine I have a range of worries about it!! Apart from how he will cope with all the change and the fuss, I'm dreading the toileting part. DH is talking about all the day trips we're going to take, but I'm half-dreading the whole thing!! Will I be going aroung looking for loos the whole time? Or lugging around a bag full of soggy stinky clothes??

Would it be the worst thing in the world if I put a pull-up on him for these times?

Would love to hear your experiences..

Thanks

Spare set of clothes in a plastic bag (I used to take 3 or 4 sets) and lots of wipes. When out and about I would bin the underwear, take the clean clothes out of the plastic bag and stick the soiled trousers/socks in to take home.

I also used to buy cheap underwear when on sale or the cost would start to escalate.

I second buying really cheap supermarket pants and treating them as disposable. Take nappy sacks for wet or soiled clothing, keep to cheap, lightweight shorts if possible, no socks and use baby wipes.

We went through this for a year or two when DS2 was 3 and 4. Didn't want to go back to pull ups, but in retrospect perhaps I should have given up on potty training after a couple of weeks and tried again much later. Once you've been doing it for ages it's too late to go back. Sad

I have to say, that at 12 yo he's still not completely reliable with number twos but it got much, much better. He sort of starts a poo, stops himself but ignores it, means very skiddy pants, but I can live with that!

Thanks everyone. I knew what the answer was going to be, was just hoping someone would have a miracle solution!!!

I have ordered these. V expensive, but might save clothes getting soaked.

For some reason I still dread the public shame of it, even though DS2 couldn't 'pass' for NT for a second!! Grin. The pitying looks and smiles make me so cross, my issue I know, cos DS is adorable and happy as a clam!!

Thanks a million.
