hello, my DD went for an appointment with a speech & language therapist yesterday after spending an hour playing and naming pictures etc the therapist asked permission to refer her for a hearing test because she was only picking up 2 key words in 3 step command(?).

I was just wondering what the test will consist of as I think most of the hearing probs may of been selective with therapist...

it will probably involve your DD playing a game with the audiologist where she does something when she hears a sound (e.g. puts a man in a boat). They might play the sounds using a loudspeaker or see if she'll wear headphones - it just depends what your DD is happy with.

HTH.

They do headphones, for older children. For younger children they play sounds through speakers at different frequencies and pitches. Your dc may well wear a bone conduction aid on a headband while they play the sounds. They mark down how quickly the response was and what band it was heard at.

as the pp have said, there's various things they can do depending on her age. It is very common to be referred for a hearing test if there are salt issues, usually just to rule it out. The ndcs has loads of info on hearing tests and audiology if you wanted to have a look.

Both of my DSs have had audiology appts. They both have/had glue ear. It's very common. They did the boat test :)

My DD had a bleep test with headphones. She was 6 at the time. Couldn;t hear, was referred to SALTs. Had a couple of sessions then they discharged her.

bloody hell Just realised that was 11 years ago!!

Ds2 just had an audiology appt on Tuesday. He's 3.5. He first had a hearing test pretty much like the one done as par of the newborn screening. Then he had one which was like the 'game' described by others. He didn't have to put on the headphones as he's young and tends to refuse almost anything anyway... There were 6 speakers I think and he had to 'catch' the loud and the quiet mice and bears. He really enjoyed that Wink

Next step will be for him to have another hearing test which I think monitors how what enters the ear is then 'transported' to the brain. Can't see that one happening unless me agreeing to having him sedated though...

Thanks for the replies!

Grin MammaTJ.

pleasegivemestrength I remember my DS having to be sedated when he was 8 wks old I can see where your coming from there, is the next step routine or is it because they weren't satisfied with the previous test results? (sorry if I sound like a complete numpty asking that question Blush

feelinchirpier I dont really know much about it either tbh. His hearing itself was great, both previous hearing tests had come back showing that there is no problem with his hearing as such. I THINK that that next test will have a look at whether what is heard is maybe not transported to the brain properly. With ds2 I never thought he had difficulties hearing, but he doesnt seem to 'get' lots of things, espcially if it's more than a couple of words.

sorry I'm a complete novice myself so what I have written may not make much sense or may even not be completely correct Blush

Hi feeling and please
The second test is to see whether they have "auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder" which is and the way the sound goes to the brain and is interpreted. For the second test they need to be 'deeply asleep' hence them being sedated (although had ours done under a general as dc wouldn't sedate).

feelinchirpier · 02/07/2012 23:23

Well you knew more than I did please :).

Oh my life frustrated you have just introduced me to another set of letters to google Wink thank you to the both of you I just wanted to know how thorough the test would be so everything won't be seen as ok and then end up back here again further down the line like my DS and his eyes (but thats another thread :)).
