Bikes and trikes

DS is 5 with ASD and has low muscle tone. He has just started to peddle big trikes at school. I would very much like to get him a trike or bike that he can manage any recommendations appreciated.

Hi,
My son is nearly 4, has ASD, hypermobile joints and poor fine motor control.
He has recently started using a trike that they have at his special needs pre-school. Previously I haven't been able to even get him interested in bikes etc.

I have just ordered him the same one as they use at pre-school. He can't manage pedals yet but scoots along using his feet. Apparantly all the kids there love this trike in particular and they have spent a lot of money on getting enough.

It is expensive though. It says £195 on the website but when you buy it it adds VAT so £245 altogether. It's quite big and they say it lasts an average size child until they are 7.

It's the one on the bottom right of the screen that says for special needs.

Thanks they look really nice. He needs something chunky like they have at school. DS also has lax joints and ordinary bikes just don't seem to suit him these look really good.

Thank you. :)

We tried all sorts of bike until a certain bike was recommended to us. Now both girls have an Islabike, which is the only bike dd1 can ride. Be prepared when you see the price! Blush
They are well made, light and easy to use. Dd2 has a smaller one which has a back pedal brake as she's not able to use hand break yet.
They do however have a great return when you come to sell them later. Hth

Your welcome chuckeyegg.

The Islabikes look very good as well Lisa. I will keep that info for when he's older, I think at my son's age he really needed a trike or something chunky and solid to start with.

If he can't pedal yet, consider a balance bike first Smile

Thanks for your replies DS has started to pedal but quite weakly, I assume if you don't have a huge amount of strength the Islabike is good being so light. I would like to get something that he will look like his peers in the park.
