14 month old communication

Hi, I started a thread when my son was about 11 months about his lack of communication, well now he is almost 14 months and he still doesn't communicate, he doesn't point or wave hello or goodbye, no words really, although when i ask him to "say ta" he will respond with "say ta!" but thats very rarely. He cant show me what he wants, if somethings out of reach he doesn't try to make me get it for him, and if he cant do something he doesn't ask for help or even look at me he just screams, a really ear piercing scream at that!

He plays with cars and trains now, so i guess that's age appropriate play, although he likes to line them up but i think that's quite normal at his age, my niece who is 18 months old does the same. Cars and trains are the only thing he plays with.

Should i be getting worried by this age or is he still quite young for doing these things, I know by googling that this can point to autism, but i also know that google can make things seem worse than what they are.

I dont want to go to the doctors if I am going to look neurotic Blush

Is he not a bit young for me to be taking him to the docs though? Not sure they would take me seriously. Thankyou for replying.

what leonie said. Chances are that the GP might want to go down the wait-and-see-route but don't let them fobb you off.

make a list of all the concerns you have and take it with you. and maybe worth getting his hearing checked (just to rule out any hearing issues).

I think I will make an appt with my GP, I looked at those videos and he is not at all like the 12 month olds that are NT, he doesn't engage in the same way, he gets quite mad when I try to play with him.

They might tell me to stop worrying and that he is fine, but i guess that's a good thing hey Smile

I have made an appt for next week Grin

I know he is too young for the m-chat now, but i did it anyway and he failed 14 questions, hopefully his development will improve in the next 2 months though.

Get in touch with your local speech therapy department. Ring them up and ask them for advice.
Will your son look at books?
Use lots of short descriptive sentences rather than questions. E.g. Car. Red car. Driving car.
Play games e.g. Blowing bubbles, when he is really enjoying it, stop and wait for him to respond. Take any noise, gesture, squawk as him asking for more, then say the word more and carry on with the activity. Keep repeating with different sorts of things, splashing water, pushing on a swing, tickling.this will model the word you want him to say.
Following websites might help
Www.ican.Org.uk
Hope this helps

I think I need to be referred to speech therapy round here, I needed to with DS2 anyway, I'll mention it to the doc. I tried the bubbles with him, he just got mad, squealing and dropping to the floor because he couldn't have the pot, I will persevere though. I also tried to play with his cars with him, it wasn't happening though he just got mad and found a different car.

He likes books but he has to be holding the book and turning the pages, wont listen to the story and not interested when I point things out for him.

Thankyou for the ideas.
