My son is 11 in Sept and is coming to the end of year 5. He has struggled with maths since year 2 and was put on the special needs register at school last year. He is not really behind in anything else apart from the fact that his writing comprehension level is abit lower than it should be bearing in mind his very good reading ability.
His teacher has said that he isn't too bad at maths at school and apparently she doesn't need to give him anywhere near as much help as some of the other children. However he has alot of problems doing his homework at home. Since year 2 I have had to give him so much help that I often feel like I am practically telling him the answer. He gets anxious and very frustrated over it. I always feel like I am teaching him form scratch even though I know he has covered it at school. He has said that he can do it usually do the work straight after the teacher has taught him how to do it but that he can't remember by the time he gets home.
He was on a level 2c in year two and is now at 3c - so he has improved abit but not by very much and that is with a fair bit of extra maths help at school.
It is difficult to know what is going on when the school are telling me he is better at maths at school than at home.
My working memory is on the 5th centile and I have been told that his working memory is weak but is not very far below normal according to the saying numbers backwards test he did. The assessor generally only assesses for literacy issues like dyslexia so he is having a further assessment to test for dyscalculic traits.
The assessor has said that both of my children are enigmatic because he is sure that they both have cognitive issues but can't get to the bottom of them.
I am really worried that he will come out normal in the test but continue to have such difficulties at home.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why he is finding maths harder at home?
Thanks for reading.
