No one knows worryingly (an unsupervised 5 year old with or without a dx left in an area where there is a window that could be broken) - he said he touched it hard but he doesn't know how it broke.... It was a window from a new posh stlye swiss cottage wendy house that the school have only just bought. The area is now to dangerous for the reception children to play in..

Thanks!! Just a bit in shock he is definately getting more of a handful but this is about the worst thing he has done at school to date.

glass in a wendy house! Shock that sounds really dangerous

wasuup3000 · 20/06/2012 16:46

Indeed!!

Glad he is OK. Now I'm sure this was an accident, and accidents happen. BUT I'm sure you will be asking questions about whether this Wendy house with real glass windows in a reception class play area was properly risk assessed won't you?

Sounds to me like it was an accident waiting to happen if what is essentially a toy just had normal glass rather than safety glass. Or maybe it wasn't fixed in properly. A child, any child, could have been seriously hurt here.

LateDeveloper · 20/06/2012 17:03

Agree this sounds like an accident - children and adults would expect a piece of play equipment to be robust. Rather than him being punished it seems like the school should be apologising - he and other children could have been badly cut.

cornysilk · 20/06/2012 17:04

what did the teachers say when you collected him? had they chastised him?

wasuup3000 · 20/06/2012 17:04

Yes you are all right of course - if anything it is the school that are at fault here. His class teacher showed me how sharp and dangerous the broken pane was..

OP posts:
wasuup3000 · 20/06/2012 17:07

The teachers find him hard to chatise - He doesn't listen or understand well and had verbal dsypraxia so his teachers don't understand him most of the time...It was left to me to apologise for him and say that he wouldn't get any treats ect at the weekend.

I'm amazed it wasn't perspex or safety glass at the very least. Have they done a risk assessment? Please don't worry, as others have said he is 5 and really it is the school at fault here, not your DS.

Desperatelywantingadvice · 20/06/2012 19:24

Your ds has actually done them a favour - just think if a child had put their hand through it and been seriously injured! Don't worry about him being excluded -they should be apologising to your ds. They should not have purchased the house without assuring it was safe for young children to use which it clearly isn't.

Glad your DS didn't get hurt! That is nuts to have glass and not Perspex in it.

Hope you ok.

He was quite stressed last night - kept asking if he had been good now. This morning he wanted me to go into school and check with his teacher that she wasn't going to be cross with him anymore. So I did. I didn't get a chance to raise the safety issue but I know the Head is uaually quite hot on safety issues such as these. If anything it may help prove that ds needs more support at school as well as no adults were watching him at the time or saw what happened. Thank you all for your supportive messages and zzzz yes exactly the schools weak point with SEN issues is fully understanding communication difficulties and the imapct these have on a child within school.

My DS broke a pane on a door when he was at nursery (attached to a school).
Initially the school were very cross. They made it sound as though he had broken a huge window on purpose. He had actually flung the door open too hard and it hit something the other side, and the pane was about a foot square. He was 4. They made it sound as though he was a criminal.
I immediately offered to pay for the damage, and then asked why they had a glass pane that wasn't safety glass and would the Head like to investigate whether there were any other dangerous panes of glass in doors. Funnily enough they didn't want my money and it suddenly was dropped.
I am appalled that they had a Wendy House with glass that was not safe, and I am sure a few words with the Health and Safety Governor wouldn't go amiss.

ouryve · 21/06/2012 16:14

Mine did, in Y1. He impulsively slammed a sliding window and it shattered everywhere. He wasn't excluded, since the head is very supportive, but I gave him a mental health day because he was a right mess (and coming down with a cold, anyhow) and after long discussion with the head, we started him on half days because he really wasn't coping with afternoons and was going to pieces after lunch, most days. He already had a statement and full time 1:1 because of his ASD and we were "in the system" for an ADHD evaluation with CAMHS but nothing was really happening at the time.

ouryve · 21/06/2012 16:15

Shouldn't a Wendy house have safety glass?

mariamariam · 21/06/2012 22:58

A Swiss Cottage Wendy house without real glass

saintlyjimjams · 21/06/2012 23:16

Ds1 broke a window at school (actually a panel of glass in a door) from headbutting it. It was fine - other than the school was a bit shocked that their glass was that crap.

saintlyjimjams · 21/06/2012 23:16

and of course that ds1 had got that upset. Although I think it was out of the blue.

wasuup3000 · 21/06/2012 23:42

I am not sure what the type of glass it was, just that I was shown a dangerous jagged piece apparently caused by my son who has conplex needs and who was unsupervised at the time. Anyway no one was hurt and I know the Head will sort out the safety issues which is the most important issue. Thanks to those of you who have shared simialr experiences. I think I was shocked that he had apparently done this. He is hard work and we have been offered Equaysm but we are awaiting the results of other medical tests first.
