Epsom Salts

Over the last couple of years DS' ADHD has slowly been improving mainly through diet changes. Medication significantly reduced with these improvements - methylphenidate 25mgs reduced to 10mgs daily and are now ready to have a break from medication in summer holidays.

I've been reading about epsom salt baths lately and think this could also help him - anyone tried this and what improvements did you have?

Thanks

Epsom salts are just a way to get magnesium. They're great and they help.

However, if you can it's better to give him magnesium (and zinc) because then you can be sure he's taken the right amount.

does it tell you how much magnesium and zinc to give a 10 year old? Also read somewhere that magnesium also needs calcium to work together.

DS isnt taking any supplements at the moment, usually takes Eye Q & multi vit but was also taking bedwetting meds and is a bit fed up of taking tablets so thought it might be easier to first try with the bath.

I give one chewable osteocare to my kids. It contains calcium, zinc & magnesium.

If he won't take tablets, then the bath is a good option.

Thanks will give those a try after i've tried the bath

How much epsom salt would you recommend to put in bath and where to buy them. CAn we use epsom bath salt for HFA.

IndigoBell · 21/06/2012 13:51

Yes, you can use epsom bath salts for HFA.

I use 1 cup every second day.

I buy from here

What do Epsom Salts actually do? I have just bought this oil spray and also give Saludynam albeit in lower dose than recommended (can't always get 3 doses in DS1 Smile)

How long will it be before possible result?

A Polish study of children with ADHD found that almost all of them (95%) were deficient in magnesium and that the greater the deficiency the more severe the symptoms. When some of the children were given magnesium supplements to restore the deficiency their symptoms improved, while those in the trial who did not receive the supplements continued to deteriorate.

Adequate levels of magnesium are also needed for a good nights sleep.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for magnesium ? Age 1-3yrs 80 mg, 4-8yrs 130 mg, 9-12yrs 240 mg.

How can you tell what dosage of magnesium is delivered with an Epsom Salts bath?

thisisthestory · 23/06/2012 18:12

Or via an oil spray such as the one I linked to above?

IndigoBell · 23/06/2012 18:14

You can't tell how much you get in the bath - that's why I don't really recommend it.

The spray says on it. Mine says '10 sprays delivers 180mg'

Ah OK Smile Thanks
