How long does Eskimo oil take to work? Regretting stopping Eye Q.

Afternoon all!

So DD(5) was actually responding really well(eventually) to the Eye Q, but I was reading lots of negative stories about it. For example, if it works then you wont really be able to drop the dosage like reccomended after 3 months, you'll need to keep it topped up, which I really didn't like the sound of. So I switched her to Eskimo.

It's only been a few days, but her behaviour has got much much worse. Very defiant, very hyper, VERY random and is just generally really standing out against her peers. Just came back from a school trip and it hit me like a brick just how different she wasSad It's the longest amount of time i've watched her interact with children her own age and I came home in tears.

Since using the Eskimo she's also been waking lots in the night screaming, she's never done this before starting Omega supplements.

Do I perservere? Or do I go back to what was actually working, the Eye Q and take the risk that she may have a relapse once we have to drop the dose?

I'm concerned that i'm doing her potential harm by swapping and changing, but i'm desperate to get it right!

What should I do?

Thanks for reading.

:(

Sorry. Really dont know what to say.

I doubt you're doing harm by swapping and changing.

You need to find something she can be on for years, so you need to be happy with it.......

Thanks Indigo. I know i'm posting about this alot recently, but I'm finding it hard to know which way to jump. Finding it difficult to sleep cos I'm thinking about it constantly.

From what i'm reading, Eskimo seems popular because it's more economical, rather than really effective. Eye Q seems to have really good effects or really bad effects. While i've got you on here Indigo, do you know what a childs RDA of omega 6 is? I can't find it out anywhere for some reason. I know it's more about ratio alongside omega 3 than anything.

No, I don't know.

BlueShark's very knowledgeable about vits.

I've just gone with vegepa, which doesn't contain any omega 6.

Maybe this will answer your questions?

I think you are looking for science where none exists. There are plenty of people who don't think fish oil has any effect on neuro conditions and its being pushed heavily by companies with vested interests e.g. Ben Goldacre. If there were a proven link fish oil would be recommended in the same way that folic oil is for pregnant women. But the evidence isn't clear enough yet. Personally I feel anecdotal evidence does have value and that Omega 3 has had an effect on my son. it's a natural substance so it can't do any harm. if I were you I would take a pseudo-scientific approach and keep a diary and keep with one supplement at a time for a decent length of time. I believe there is a complex interplay between genes and environment/diet so what works for one child might not be right for another. If you are seeing bad side effects perhaps lessen the doses a little/a lot?! I know it seems like an obvious question but does she eat fish? One of the reasons I supplement is because my son won't.

Thanks bassington.

She does eat fish, but not as much as i'd like her too. I used to say it was too expensive to buy salmon etc all the time, but if i'm going down the Eye Q route then i'll probably end up spending more in the long run anyway.

Do you know if you can take the 2 spoonfulls together? Or do you have to spread it out? Before when I was giving it to her and trying to get it up to the recommended 3, I was giving her 1 and a half twice a day. I've emailed and called Equazen to ask them, but they haven't got back to me and it's been over a week!!

from what I've heard it is healthiest to get nutrition via actual food (rather than relying on supplements) so forget about the price of fish! Oily fish is good but also try plaice, prawns etc. which can be popular with children and also contain good oils.

I only give one a day so don't know about the all in one go question sorry.

IndigoBell · 20/06/2012 10:07

I disagree.

As far as I can tell the reason our kids our do defecient in omega and everything else is because they can't absorb it from the food they eat.

We've taken DD to a nutritionist to try and get proper answers. And I'm sure I'll report back when I do. But it is costing a fortune.

blueShark · 20/06/2012 10:51

I agree with Indigo that our kids dont necessarily absorb nutrients from food. DS ate oily fish 2-3 times a week and still since I started him on eskimo 2 years ago miracle happened with ey contact, interaction, attention levels.

But I have switched to Vegepa also and seen continuous improvements, cant say whether is more or less.

What I can say that I started DS2 (NT) on Vegepa 2 weeks and I am amazed by the complexity of speech, he is 3. he is also calmer and not so much attention seeking, bless him with DS SN and the baby he was always left to his own devices...Now he is so much more understanding when mum is attending to the others, winging stopped....His best friend has gone back to japan and he said how he wanted a lego for his bday to build the fastest motorbike and go to japan. His balloon espaped in the air and rather than cry like a typical 3 y old he said no worries mum, when we fly on the plane I am sure we can catch him, wait for me up there balloon :) I know I go on about NT child here but these changes are so recent and I dont attribute him to him growing up and brain maturing as its only been 2 weeks. Behaviour Balance though made my NT son bouncing on the walls!

Dont forget that in the old days every child was served a big spoon of cod liver oil or fish oil after breakfast and also lots of research shows that in the nordic countries and mediteranean the percentage of the neuro developmental disorders and behaviour diff are nowehere near what we have here.

bassingtonffrench · 20/06/2012 11:48

Indigo/blue shark. I don't think we do disagree. But i was just trying to help OP who said worrying about supplementation and side effects was affecting her sleep! I thought pointing out the obvious about fish might actually be helpful in this case. Also, presumably the reason that neuro disorders are lower in certain societies is because they eat lots of fish!!! yes it might be that absorption is an issue for some people but presumably there is still some benefit.

Glad to hear your NT child is doing well on Vegepa blue shark. My NT child won't touch fish oil but will eat fish fortunately. very much liking the sound of no whinging, could do with that here!

Thanks everyone. Food for thought there! Rather fitting expression don't you think!

Had a bloody awful morning. Didn't get DD into school til later as she had a massive meltdown. She's got her school photo today, but she looks terrible with her puffy eyes and half brushed hair. That was as far as we were going to get unfortunately. But in the scheme of things, slightly messy hair is the least of our worries.

Just come back from a long drive. Trying desperately to get my head together. Dp last night adopted a tough love approach with me, which was the last thing I needed. I broke down as soon as we got into bed cos I knew I wouldn't sleep as all this was running through my head. He tried to comfort me, but in the worst way. He said "you've got to snap out of it. You have to accept who she is" I know I do and I love her to pieces, but the prospect of this incredibly bumpy road which we inevitably have ahead, is scaring me. It's making me feel pathetic and weak. I see some really strong mum and dads at DD's school who have DC's with much deeper issues than my DD and it makes me feel angry at myself.

I'm sorry, i've got off the subject a little. Not having a good week. I'm having CBT currently and i'm not feeling like i'm coping any better. Obviously I have my up days, but over the past couple of weeks, I just feel overwhelmed by it all. I think i'm looking for somethng that doesn't exist. A cure. How can I help my DD when i'm feeling so negative? Feeling like the worlds worst mother today.

bassington - I am sorry, I didnt mean to sound the way you may have taken it, I am always in a rash to post and somethimes thinsg dont come accross well :( the vegepa chewables with orange flavour taste delicious according to ds2 who doesnt go anywhere near yacky food...

detox - so sorry you are having an emotional few days. Its hard with the lack of sleep, constant worries about how to help our kiddies progress and foresee the future...be kind to yourself although this is coming from someone who is you *10 in that department Hmm Hope things will get better.

I havent heard of fish oil causing hyoeractivity or sleep issues, surely Mr Google will throw better explanation, the only negative thing about high doses of fish oils is that they can thin the blood, not sure how much you have to take to get to this bad point though...

bassingtonffrench · 21/06/2012 10:22

Detox...sorry things have been so bad. you don't sound like the world's worst mother at all. you sound like you are doing loads.

blueshark. no probs Smile
