CCC-2 8th percentile?

DS1 is 6 and in Y1. His teachers were concerned about anxiety he was displaying in class and so an assessment has been carried out by the County Ed Psych.

The report arrived this morning, and says that his Wechsler and Block Design scores are in the high 90s percentiles, while his Pragmatic language score from the Children's Communication Checklist-2 is on the 8th percentile.

I cannot get hold of the Ed Psych or the SENCO, so I'd really like some advice about what this means. The report says that there is a "discrepancy" in his test scores, but to my untrained eye, that is a huge discrepancy! Various strategies have been put forward to help him, all of which I am happy with, but none of them are particularly drastic (mainly me reminding him to listen to other people's opinions, and making sure he has plenty of time to relax and play) - to me, these seem quite minor measures if the discrepancy is really as extreme as it looks to me.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts - I have no experience of the SALT / SN field, so clarification would be great!

Do you have any concerns other than his anxiety? He's obviously a bright lad but that sort of 'spiky' profile is familiar to me. Have a look at semantic pragmatic disorder. It's possibly on the edge of the autism spectrum, but there is some debate about that. My DS2 has high functioning autism and had a similarly spiky profile at 5yo but he had many other behaviours which caused concern.

Thanks for all the replies.

Eyesight and hearing all fine. He is pretty much a free reader so reads all sorts of stuff, but we try to talk alot about what things mean. Thanks for info about Semantic Pragmatic Disorder and the language book, which sound interesting - I will check them out and see if they ring bells.

I don't really have any other concerns, he's very chatty, with good vocab and grammar and good use of language (acknowledged in the report). He likes people, especially one-to-one and adults, but also has friends etc. He's a very different kettle of fish from his younger brother, but I figure that's just his personality - he seems quite like my Dad and also my DH.

LeonieDelt - from your knowledge, what are your thoughts on CCC-2?

EllenJane - thank you for the link on SPD - it does sound like my DS in quite a number of ways.

I am waiting for a call back from the Ed Psych, and have a meeting with the SENCO on Friday afternoon, so will see if this is something they are considering. Even if it isn't, I suspect that some of the techniques mentioned in the articles that would help my DS, so it would be worth trying them anyway.

Interesting that you say CCC-2 is a great checklist for parents. Reading up on it today, it certainly seems to be very helpful in picking up things that may be missed by other checks. The information I have found says that it works
"by obtaining judgments from parents or other adults who have regular contact with the child. Respondents are asked to rate the frequency with which the behavior described in each item occurs."

The Ed Psych has not had regular contact with DS - she has only actually spoken to him on one day, and so unless she asked his teachers to do it (which is possible) I don't see how she could have administered it herself - I was not involved in the assessment other than a brief chat at the end to tell me what she had found. I will check with the SENCO on Friday as to whether she or DS's class teacher had any input into it.

Thanks for that info, very helpful. I have found an article by Margo Sharp, which was very interesting, too - I need to read it when I am not also trying to get two noisy boys into bed!
