trying to argue a special school place so was wondering how much funding a statement for 20, 25 and 32.5 hours brings.

Funding support in mainstream[according to our SEN Team, this is - who, frankly speak mostly out of their backsides!] - is Band A -£4,596 pa
Band B - £7,422PA in addition to the AWPU [The Age Weighted Pupil Unit] that is given to mainstream schools.
Does this help at all?

you want you child to go to special school? it's loads more expensive than keeping a child in mainstream

mycarscallednev · 11/06/2012 10:42

Not if you add the AWPU plus the costs of equipment, training and adaptations.

StarlightMaJesty · 11/06/2012 10:48

Well if the statement says 'child to have access to TA for 32.5 hours' then it costs the LA nothing additional if the class has a TA. Equally they will argue that the AWP cost is zero because they woukd be spending it anyway on another child as they have to ensure adequate state placements iyswim.

But you can look at the job adverts for TAs in your LA, then add around 20% for on costs and you'll get a true cost of a TA. Also, depending on the other interventions you might be able to argue that the TA has to have a certain basic level if training to deliver the interventions recommended by the experts.

So to specify 1-1 then for support plus quantifing that plus qualifications? Then to factor in additionals to ensure these are met such as equipment and IT support etc?
Does anyone know exactly what range the AWPU is - we have been led to believe its in the region of approx £5k pa for mainstream?
Good idea Star to look up pay scales - going to google that now!

StarlightMaJesty · 11/06/2012 11:19

Direct OT and SALT is around £100 per hour.

So really the first thing you need to do is get TA, and interventiones properly specified then you can often show that a SS placement is cheaper.

Hi Mycars. You mention band A and band B for funding. What determines which band a child is in?

mycarscallednev · 11/06/2012 12:02

Their Statement and the amount of support they have been awarded - but apparently 'banding' is being pushed out now - take a look at your LA website and look at the SEN Matrix and this may give you more idea.
We were told that our son is band D - but, in actual fact this has meant very little as the support he needed still wasn't given.

FioFio · 11/06/2012 12:09

i thought a special school place costs anything from 30k pa upwards?

CwtchesAndCuddles · 11/06/2012 12:34

My son is in a ss - average cost of a place there is £20,000

mycarscallednev · 11/06/2012 12:51

Looking at an ISS costings are £5,560 per term - 3 terms per year.

bjkmummy · 11/06/2012 13:11

depends on the special school i guess - the one my older son is going to in sept is £18k a year - another local one is 15k - i did a feedom of information request to find out the figure. my younger son currently has 20 hours of funding but school say cant meet his needs any longer even with fulltime support as he needs so much extra help on top. know it will come down to money - im guessing a fulltime TA for him which is what school said he needs as a minimum isnt going to be far off a specail school place - ultimately cost probably wont come into it cos the mainstream school cannot meet his needs
