DD putting hands in mouth whilst feeding

Constantly. You give her a mouthful of food and she immediately trys to put her hands in in a sensory exploration! Sometimes makes herself sick. Very messy. It's really getting to me. It's weird what gets to you and what doesn't, isn't it?! Any ideas? Why?

How old is she?

JakB · 22/02/2006 21:06

5, anniebear. She has autism and SLD. Sorry, know it's only a small thing but for some reason it's getting to me!

Do you feed her? Could you give her something to hold while you are doing it? Would she hold a spoon and fork?

Ds2 is a very messy eater, using his fingers a lot of the time. I am up and down all through the meal wiping his fingers between courses and cleaning the table. Usually it's part of life then sometimes I just think how fed up I am with it! Like you say it's a relatively small thing but I understand why it gets you down.

No, it would get to me also

Ellie uses her hands a lot to eat, is perfectly capable of using a spoon or fork!! which I always tell her too!

She also chews on her finger a lot which annoys me so much!! No sure if it is because I bite my nails?? and she is copying me or if to do with her SN

Sorry, a load of waffle there and of no help to you!

Hope somebody is of more use!!

Yeah, I do feed her but she puts a loaded spoon in her mouth. Find if I give her something to hold, she does it anyway. We are working on her feeding herself. Probably just a phase! We'llbe on to something else next week

Jak,
my son goes through phases of doing that and it drives me round the bend, though not as much as the days when he refuses to eat anything if I won't let him put his forehead in it first
usually whne it getrs to the point whree I'm considering cutting his fingers off, or putting him in a brace so he can't bend over he just stops of his own accord and doesn't do it again till you'd forgotten he ever did..

not very helpful, sorry!

Maybe because you're working on it she's more conscious of it. I agree though, when you get to your limit on something and its driving you mad, next thing you know they've moved on!

Yeah, I look forward to next week's 'stim'!!
