Sensory problems with trousers

DS1 will not do his trousers up. He only wears two pairs (both school trousers - every day). both these pairs have zips at the front. He point blank refuses to wear the ones without zips now. And now he refuses to do them up meaning he has to keep his hand in his pocket at all times. and we often get a glimpse as do others of things we shouldn't be seeing especially when out and about. I've told him I'm going to get braces but he won't have 'em. i just don't see an answer.

I am sorry jerbil, this sounds really difficult for you.

Dd3 is very particular about what she will wear but never undoes her buttons or zips so have never had this issue.

Would he maybe be able to tolerate joggers, perhaps starting off for 2 minutes and then getting a reward and building up very slowly.

Does he responds to visual timelines, so you could put the time and a picture of the alternative trousers and then then the time he can take them off and a picture of the reward.

Just a thoughtSmile

Dont know if this will help...my ASD highly sensory son hates trousers any higher than his hips. So his underwear is almost always on show Grin.
Highly sensitive around his back- retained spinal galant reflex apparently.

I buy elasticated waist zip up trousers that he wear slouched down, and I turn up the ends. Its looks awful but at least its the uniform pants.

mariamariam · 09/06/2012 00:04

A bit cruel but can you oversee the zip so it cant open?

Jerbil · 09/06/2012 10:32

DS1 is 6. He wears no underwear whatsoever, no pants, no socks whatever the weather.
Tried joggers earlier this year and he was tieing the string from the waist round the handle bar of his scooter so it didn't touch his belly. He also only wears his trousers round his hips so very familiar with that look. If I do get him to wear trousers without a zip and I haven't managed that for a month, he keeps his arm down his trousers all day so they don't touch his belly. Knowing he wears no underwear his CT was not amused.

Building up slowly does sound like a plan.

Sensory smart clothes. Yes I'm on the lookout so if you have any recommendations it would be appreciated. The ones I've seen tend to be close fitting whereas he'd prefer very loose but ones that stay up.

It's the teasing I worry about. So far we've got away with it but it's only a matter of time.

www.fledglings.org.uk do sensory clothes. sounds really tough jerbil. my ds will only wear tracksuit bottoms, so not that bad now he's in SS but a nightmare when he was in mainstream.

I assume you've tried the whole character pants thing, or letting him choose some in the shop, opening up packs to touch them etc? I wonder if you can get bamboo fibre pants for kids? That's lovely and silky and stretchy.
Re making your own, how about soft polyester fleece joggers?

SilkStalkings · 09/06/2012 15:21

Bamboo kidswear

Yes re the character thing but we bought him a pair of sponge bob pjs and he will not even try them. He tends to like plain and black.

Hothead that sounds about right yes. We get stuck too. He misses out on the park etc. interesting re antihistamine. Did u think of that yourself?

Ill take a look at the recommendations thanks everyone
