A book about going on an aeroplane - anyone seen one?

Has just occurred to me that as part of DS's holiday preparation a book about going on an aeroplane might be a good tool, a picture book with words. Has anyone seen any they think might be suitable?

T+T website isn't loading for me - I will have a peek on amazon see if I can see it that way. He's seven but a very young 7 so may be fine. Smile Book wise he still loves Gruffalo, Hungry Caterpillar, etc - picture books with words rather than wordy books with the odd picture.

Ah yes zzzzz we do that too, cut pictures out of brochures, watch videos on youtube, etc.

Richard scary does an airport book

Manchester airport does a free downloadable travel guide for autism

There are also iPad / iPod apps on airports / going on a plane

AgnesDiPesto · 07/06/2012 09:47

Scarry not scary!

That Manchester airport book is like the one we have, but we were given the book by DS2's TA last year, as she saw it and thought we might find it interesting.

Can you check with the airport (or check online) and see if that particular airport has a similar book you could get?

boredandrestless · 07/06/2012 10:27

Ooh it is Manchester Airport we are going to! Thanks for that, didn't realise airports did their own things like this.

hairylemon that's really nice of you Smile

Wow that Manchester airport one is really good. Makes a refreshing change to see a place so geared up to helping those travelling with a child with autism.

Having recently returned from a trip to Oz with my ASD 8 year old, I found the airport websites great to walk him through it. We also looked at the airline website so he could look at the plane and we did lots of talking about who the staff were (stewards, pilot, ground crew, baggage handlers etc). I downloaded the National Geographic app for him to play with.

We also made some stories about who, what, where - who we give the bags to, what do they do with them, where do they go etc and lots about safety in airport and in crowds. Good luck

I strongly recommend The New Social Story book which is jam packed full of useful social stories as well as a CDRom which allows you to create and customise your own from blueprints.

A fantastic resource.

It's my present bedtime reading. Smile
I always knew about Social Stories and have used some but to my shame never realised the protocol on writing one was very precise and that, moreover, it is an evidence based practice.

I shall be using a lot more of them in the future.

porridgelover · 07/06/2012 12:32

Thanks for that Moondog....another one living on beans and toast for a while....Amazon love sending me links to 'another thing you may like' Grin

That book looks really good moondog I really want to use socail stories with Dd3 as I am sure she would benefit from them.

My only problem at the moment is getting her to comply with actually sitting down and working with me.

The Senco at her school is going to see if she can get her to comply and then I will have another go.

Thanks for the linkSmile

jandymaccomesback · 07/06/2012 16:33

We had the Usborne one. It was brilliant.

We are travelling from East Midlands this summer and I sent an email to the assistance contact to ask if security staff had ASD awareness training. They have offered to close off a lane just for us to go through so that we don't have to queue or deal with crowds.

The more people who ask the better prepared they will be.
