Just wanted to let everyone who is still struggling with toilet training an autistic child - ds1 has now (as of this weekend !) achieved full independence with his toileting. It has been a long process (as it often is !) but starting with being able to use toilet independently for pee aged 4 to being able to use the toilet for poo under adult led schedule - he is now just taking himself without any fuss or even having to be asked !! He is just turned 8 btw And most miraculously of all, he will even use toilets outside home !! All in one weekend.

There is definitely hope - There were many days in the past when I thought I would have to accept it would never happen

Thats fab, well done to your DS xxxx

We eventually trained dd2 at the age of 4 (2 weeks before she started school).

Identical trajectory to willowthecat here.

I wish more people had reassured me that it can happen, quite without stress or palaver, around the age of 8. It would have saved me 4 years of fruitless worry and attempts to move things along faster than the child was ready.

Oh wow^ what ommm said.
I banged my head trying to get my 8 y.o. ASD son to be fully toilet trained day and night, home and school.
Only in the last 4-5 months are we getting there.

Congrats, willow, and well done DS

We dream of this day. We thought we were there a while back:

but got nowhere. Your news is cause for hope. Well done and thanks.

Congratulations! DS1 took 5 years to progress form occasional wees in the loo to dry all day, a few months before his 8th birthday. Almost a year on, he still wears a pull up at night, but we'll deal with that when he's ready. (actually - might have a go, tonight, since he's getting a whole new bed, tomorrow!

DS2 is 6 and showing no signs of readiness, btw. He won't have anything to do with the loo, apart from randomly flushing it.
