Hi everyone.

My dd who is 5 is starting to show more and more signs of ASD and so therefore is starting to really struggle at school as work and friendships become more complex. I've posted on here several times and you've all always been really helpful, so i'm hoping you'll be able to help me with this on.

I've been talking to several other mumsnetters who rave about the benefits of Omega 3 especially taken in high dosages and taken alongside zinc and magnesium. I'm getting dizzy with all the conflicting research i've been doing and thought i'd come on here and ask about your experiences first hand.

DD's main problems are social interaction, this includes odd speech paterns and poor concentration, although academically she's probably only a little behind.

I have heard that upping Omega 3 to 2000mg can be incredibly beneficial, where as the RDA is actually 450mg. Apparently one of the side effects for having too much omega 3 was thinning of the blood, which obviously caught my attention.

I gave her Eskimo kids tutti frutti a while back, but her behaviour actually got worse so I stopped it after a couple of weeks. I'm certain it was that and not a coincidence. I then heard about needing to take Zinc and magnesium along side it for the benefits of Omega to really kick in and so I brought her vitabiotics zinc and magnesium, which gave her a reallly bad reaction as she suffers from asthma and i've since found out that the orange flavouring in it can cause this bad reaction so I had to stop that too.

With the tablets, can i crush them down and add them to her food? Are they usually tasteless? She really hated those chewey tablets that you can get because they still taste of fish.

Really appreciate your advice and experiences. The more I read about it, if you get the amounts just right, the benefits are amazing!

Thanks very much everyoneSmile

Sorry no-one has answered you detox obviously you already know my Omega preference and I have tried quite a few sorry can't be more of a help. There was a thread posted fairly recently by Voidka on the same topic maybe search for that one might give you a few more suggestions?

detoxneedednow · 06/06/2012 12:00

Thanks Holy!Smile

You've already been a massive help, I was just trying to get a few more opinions and experiences.

Going out this afternoon to do the supplement run. I'm not going to ask for advice this time, as last time I did that they looked at me like I had three heads!!

Can you buy that brand you suggested over the counter, or do you have to buy that online?

Maybe i'll get some more posts soonSad

OP posts:
HolyCalamityJane · 06/06/2012 12:05

I got it on amazon. Doubt they have it in shops don't waste your money on crappy kids ones!!

detoxneedednow · 06/06/2012 12:38

How long did it take to come through? Is your dd on zinc and magnesium too? I you said that she was on a multi vitamin too.

OP posts:
detoxneedednow · 06/06/2012 12:39

Oh and is the one you're talking about a tablet or liquid?

OP posts:
HolyCalamityJane · 06/06/2012 13:10

Multivitamin is Floradix Kindervital. Zinc and mag is Floradix saludynam both are fruit flavoured for kids they are liquid and contain no artificial sweeteners. The omega is in capsule form lemonade flavour liquid in capsule which you just cut and squeeze out. For me the omega is the most important one Smile

HolyCalamityJane · 06/06/2012 13:49

Things are a bit quiet on here of late a load of us have buggered off over to Facebook!!

PegPolkadot · 06/06/2012 21:05

Do these actually work? I am v new to all this and I have been reading through the threads here with interest. I don't really know where to start but if the vitamins and omega work I would give it a go.

notapizzaeater · 06/06/2012 22:28

I put my (probable ASD / Poss PDA) DS onto eskimo kids brainsharp capsules and behaviour balance tablets at the same time, it calmed his behaviour down and he is nowhere near as angry. As to which made a diff I've no idea.

IndigoBell · 07/06/2012 07:31

Peg - yes this stuff works if your child is defecient in omega, zinc & magnesium - which he almost certainly is.

One study found 98% of kids with ADHD were defecient in magnesium.

You need Omega - I recommend vegepa which you can only but online. It's the EPA part of the omega you need - not the DHA.

And you need zinc & magnesium - I recommend floradix salyudnum

And you need B6 and B12.

Behaviour balance contains very high levels of B12. It helps some kids - a lot. But for other kids it's too much B12 and makes the problem worse.

mycarscallednev · 07/06/2012 07:36

Indigo - I've read that its helpful for Dyslexic children too - do you have any experience of this at all?
I've just bought - Equazen EPA and he is on 6 a day to start with.

IndigoBell · 07/06/2012 07:38

OP - did the eskimo kids supplement contain artificial sweeteners?

The majority of supplements you can buy in the shops contain artificial sweeteners which can make the problem worse.

They also mostly contain very little EPA which is the part of the omega you want.

I've posted many times what supplements my kids are on. They are helping - but that is only one part of the therapy we're doing.

DDs seeing a nutritionist at the moment. Will be interesting to see what she recommends.

You certainly need omega, zinc, magnesium , B6 and B12.

IndigoBell · 07/06/2012 07:48

MyCars - yes these supplements are necessary for dyslexia as well.

My DD has very bad dyslexia, DS1 has mild aspergers and DS2 has mild dyspraxia.

After years of researching these conditions and trying everything on my kids, I'm fairly sure all of these conditions are caused by leaky gut. Read 'the GAPS diet' for more info.

One of the side effects of leaky gut is that our kids don't absorb vitamins from their diet properly, which is why they're deficient and why you need to supplement.

To help the leaky guy you need to go gluten / dairy free and take probiotics.

Then you also need to fix all the other problems that long term leaky gut has caused (neurodevelopment, vision and auditory)

You need to do everything - and then you can achieve miracles.

PegPolkadot · 07/06/2012 08:01

Thank you so much for all that information Indigobell. After years of thinking I have a nightmare of a child it turns out he has aspergers (he is 8) and we are just waiting for him to be tested. Any information I can get is a real bonus and I will definitely get the supplements.

I have been reading all the threads on here looking for advice and info and read through the one about going gluten free. One of DS's issues is constipation. At the moment it 'seems' ok but I am now trying to make a mental note of how often he goes. He had major issues as a toddler and was on movicol for about 2 years. I will go and read your link with interest.

mycarscallednev · 07/06/2012 08:28

Indigo - our son has EDS, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and a host of other co-morbid conditions and syndromes - I'm willing to try anything - how did you hear about all this. I often read your posts and you are very well informed. It means alot to get reccommedation from someone who has tried and tested.

IndigoBell · 07/06/2012 08:51

I am very close now to fixing all of DS1s issues and making good progress with DDs problems. (will work on DS2 next year.....)

I think you just need to do everything. I have spent the last few years obsessively researching all this stuff - and then have tried anything I thought might work.

These are the things I have done which have worked:

Gluten / dairy free
Auditory integration training
Retained reflex therapy
Cranial osteopath
Tinsley house

My current hypothesis is that the GAPS diet is right. Their problems started with bad gut bacteria, which caused leaky gut. Leaky gut caused neuro development problems. Neurodevelopment problems caused vision and auditory problems.

All of those problems can be solved. You solve all those problems and all of your child's problems will disappear.

We have been doing therapy daily for about 3 years. And bit by bit we've got there.

All you need to do is fix their:
Dietary problems
Vitamin / mineral deficiencies
Neurodevelopment problems
Vision problems
Auditory problems

It takes a few years to do all that. And we've had to try 2 or 3 different solutions for each if those problems. But each thing we tried got us a bit closer. And over 3 years I've got there.

The best therapist is Tinsley House - but you probably need to do more than just TH.

mycarscallednev · 07/06/2012 09:05

Thank you - I'll google TH now x

detoxneedednow · 07/06/2012 10:02

Hi IndigoSmile

Thanks for posting. You have actually given me a lot of advice about all this before, but actually after we stopped using the Eskimo kids, her behaviour got so much better and she was doing great in school. We put it down to general maturing and cutting out sweets etc. However, in the last month or so her behaviour, attention span and social skills have deteriorated quite severely.

The Eskimo range, i'm pretty sure is free from artificial colours, sweeteners etc. However, when I was giving her this, I wasn't giving her the zinc and magnesium, which I understand is supposed to give the omega a boost.

With the Eye Q range, is suggests that she has 3 5ml a day for the first 3 months. That works out as 2400mg of omega though which sounds an enormous amount. I think I might just stick to 2 5ml initially and see how she goes.

I have read some amazing stories of dc's and their families lives being completely transformed by this, so fingers crossed we're one of them. I'm realistic though and understand it's not a miracle cure.

mycarscallednev · 07/06/2012 20:23

detox - lets compare notes in what - 3 months? Good luck x

detoxneedednow · 08/06/2012 09:57

Good idea mycars. Does your ds struggle socially? Or is it mainly his concentration and co ordination that he struggles with? My dd's social skills are up and down, but she's never been where she should be. She tends to talk randomly and out of context. She can't ride a bike/trike or scooter. However, school say she's got no problem with her co ordinationHmm

I have to admit there's rather conflicting advice on how much of this to give a child. Also, i'm a little concerned because she has asthma and a lot of medicines she's taken in the past instantly make her wheezy. She's coughing a lot today. Hope it's got nothing to do with this. Fingers crossed.
