Just thought I share this experience...My son has Cerebral palsy, he is 8 years old and suffered a severe stroke at birth due to prematurity. This left him with a range of health issues, one being mobility problems. Difficulty walking, coordination between brain and limbs etc etc. List goes on and on. He is very determined and last Friday his school had a sports day. I was nervous and even thought about keeping him home. He asked to be signed up to do spoon and egg race and another fun race. I didn't want to see him hurt because he would not be able to run as other children. His difficulties have been causing him lots of frustration lately because he just wants to be able to do everything his friends do. When it came time for his first race, the egg and spoon one, he came in last, even though he was given a jump start. I could see he was embarrassed and upset with himself. When he had to run his fun race, I braced myself for another disappointment, thinking how I would comfort him and rehearsing the words in my mind to make him feel better. What I saw that morning is something that I will never forget! There were about 7 other children running in same race, all same age and year group as my son. When they saw how hard he was trying to run and how much pain he was in, they all ran the race but stayed just behind him to cheer him up and allowed him to win. He was so happy and it just made his day that he was able to win. It touched my heart seeing other children being so compassionate and giving my son the opportunity of experiencing for once how it felt to win. I was taking pictures and filming, I just dropped everything and ran to the finish line to hug him and tell him how proud I am of him. He said to me 'Mummy did you see that I actually won! Can you believe it? '
