Has anyones child used Earplugs?

DD has been complaining a lot recently about noise at school in the dining hall. Has anyones child ever used earplugs in noisy environments, if so, are they any good? - I was thinking earplugs rather than ear defenders as they are less noticeable. Thanks

Hi Evie

We had the same thought. We went to the audiologist at the hospital who said that we could try but that actually DS needed to get used to the noise...who knows whether this is right or not? I did buy some noise filtering earplugs but he wore them twice and then lost them Grin. How old is your DD? DS was only just 5 so him losing them was bound to happen.

yes particularly fireworks etc. but we've now bought him ear defenders and he actually likes the feeling they give him. can't wear them at the mo cos he split his ear open doh!

Thanks for replies - DD is just turning six so I think there is a high possibility she would probably lose them too Smile plus they do look a bit difficult to insert - DD is not too bad with noise generally but audiologist did confirm that she does her "too well" - I think she has found some type of coping mechanism because she is not bothered by loud or sudden noise in general just the sound of lots of children together in the school playground and dinner hall - she told me she did not like the other children because they are too noisy Sad.

We used to use ear plugs and ear deffenders with dd until OT told us not too, apparently it makes the ear more sensitive. We introduced dd2 slowlly to the lunch hall by moving her table closer to the hall each day (it took a while), she can now tolerate it most days (if she's tired or ill then she struggles a bit). Dd2 also had therapy (theraputic listning programme) which has helped a lot, she can now take part in most noisy activities with her class.

Thanks Marne - DD is on the waiting list for listening therapy so hopefully it will help.

Thats good Eveie, it has helped dd2 so much i hope it works for your dd, in the meantime i would ask the school if she can leave the hall if things get too much for her or sit near the door. We decided to remove dd2 from the hall for a while as she would not eat her lunch and was getting very upset (so she sat in the classroom with TA for a while), now she eats in the hall every day.
