hi we was told this week they keeping daughter in reception for an other year instead of going to class one, don't think its going to work ill explain but don't know what to do about it all.

she been in foundation full time since sept last year she as a full 1 to 1 as medical needs as well as learning ones and just found out she is also losing her hearingSad anyway the foundation there is 70 children with lots of teachers and part time staff our teacher foe deaf said she is really struggling with her hearing so many children and said when she goes to class 1 on a class she may be better as its more sit down trying to learn and get a 1 to 1 better than all changing teachers, its took us ages for them to admit Chloe as learning problems and now using it as a way to keep her in foundation ! they told us she would be working with top f2 children from sept but stopping there. now am worried because she will still think time to play, lose her friends and of cause not going to help her hearing i did stress my concerns but they said oh she will be going into different quiet corners ( but it will still effect her hearing, with all background noise ) just dont know what i can do or do i just go along with it?

It's usually the other way round - schools preventing parents from keeping their child back a year or repeating a year.

If it's any help the ususal excuse that school uses for refusing to keep a child in Reception is that it would not be age appropriate and that it would bad for his/her self-esteem to see their classmates moveing up a Year while they stay behind.

I don't know whether what the school are suggesting to you is good or bad but if you wish to challenge it you could use the arguments I mentioned.

I'd guess that it's more for the convenience of the school rather than Chloe if the school are going against the teacher for the deaf's advice. I'd guess that Chloe isn't actually getting full time 1 to 1 support but is actually being supported in groups by whichever teacher is leading the activity at the time.I'd ask the teacher for the deaf's support in demanding your dd is placed with her friends in the class that you believe would be better for her with the full time 1 to 1 support that she is entitled to. Any hesitation I'd contact IPSEA and get their help in forcing the school to meet Chloe's needs.

The usual mnsn mantra of:
"Don't delay, apply for statutory assessment today"

doesn't quite apply, you need to get everything you've been told so far about the level of help she will need, how much reception work she's missed etc...in writing as it'll be denied as soon as you apply for the SA. Keep anything they've written so far, then arrange a format for these exchanges which proves they took place. Link book will do, or perhaps an email correspondence between you, ToD and Head)

Am fairly sure that charity employs staff to help with appeals etc re statements as I am sure I saw them advertise the post once!
You need to apply for a Statement for 1:1. the school are doing what is cheap for them but not in your daughters best interests.
Keeping her down a year is actually very good evidence she is either wrongly placed in mainstream or her needs are not being met.
The LA are unlikely to be that happy about it as from their perspective it will mean an extra year of education funding.

agree with wet and insanity, this move doesn't sound in your daughters' best interests, school should be supporting her and differentiating the curriculum if necessary, so she stays with her peer group. How attached are you/DD to the school, could you move her somewhere better locally?

trace2 · 27/05/2012 11:41

hi sorry not been on justabout is right we have a full 1 to 1 already but they are abusing it they say she as a named teacher but we know she is mostly there for play times and dinner times , they use other teachers for learning as they have so many children they have lots of teacher in foundation me thinks that's why they don't want her moving up because they can use the teacher that they employ for her 1 to 1 in foundation, where if she moves up so does one teacher to be with all always if you get my meaning i think they are doing for there benefit NOT CHLOE!

Ah well, you may be in a stronger position, I presume statement doesn't say part 3 "leave her in reception forever"?

Write to the director of education

  1. Request a firm date for the annual review with LA officer present.
  2. Give formal notice that you are challenging the decision to hold her back a year as you believe it is detrimental to her social & emotional development & would deny her access to the national curriculum at the appropriate age level.
  3. You would like to verify that the school has implemented the statement correctly to date.

Copy the letter to the HT & Chair of Governors.

They are taking the Billy Carmichael & know it so call their bluff.
