ADHD?

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post in, so sorry if it's not.

My 11 year old son has a referral to the ADHD assessment clinic. This is after years of me asking his schools (we have moved a bit as my DH is in the army) to investigate, but they never would, until the last school, but unfortunately we had to move before he was assessed. His current school at first felt there wasn't a problem, but have now agreed there is, hence the referral.

Does anyone know of any good websites where I can find more info on ADHD or can anyone tell me anything about it and what the assessment process might involve please?

DS1's assessment was over several appointments and consisted of the following

An initial meeting, covering history, our concerns and filling out a Conners Scale assessment
A further meeting, observing him at play.
Another meeting, keeping us up to date and apologising for some delays in the process, caused by staff shortages, that we'd become rather frustrated by, since DS1 wasn't even managing to attend school full time at the time.
A school observation, plus school filling out various forms and a conners scale assessment. All these meetings were with a "mental health worker"
A final meeting with the psychiatrist to discuss his condition and our options for treatment. We had met this guy before when DS1 was younger and diagnosed with Autism with hyperactivity.

This link explains the Conners scale and also has links about ADHD itself. There's loads of different snippets of information about ADHD and the different types (eg inattentive, hyperactive, oppositional) available through google, but I've never found one good and totally impartial site that doesn't seem to have an agenda. www.attentiondeficit-add-adhd.com/adhd-connors-test.htm

PS - even that site doesn't even spell the name of the test correctly!

Thanks. The appointment is with the Child and Adolescent mental health team and they have sent some forms to fill in and take with us, plus some for the school to fill in, which include the Conner's scale.

I did find some info on the NHS site earlier, but will look at the link now. Thankyou.

I'm actually now wondering if I have it too. I was called 'hyperactive' by the doctor when younger and do have a lot of traits and see it can be familial. Confused

Midori, is dh still in?

If you end up with a dx, etc, make sure you register with CEAS Upavon (on the mod website) especially if he ends up with additional support in school etc.

Have two dcs with sn. CEAS are a good sounding board especially for overseas posting s and frequent moves for sn kids.

Thanks.

Madwoman, yes, his blood is actually reggie colours I think... Grin one of my other sons has Downs Syndrome. I didn't realise the forces had a service regarding this. Thank you. Hopefully we'll be able to stay put for the next 5 years, which will help, but you just never know, do you? We should have another 2 1/2 years here now though.

Your wee man with Downs should deffo be registered. You should also make sure you are on the SSAFA special needs list - they have a newsletter and run Special needs conferences every year for serving families with sn. I've been to two of them and they are well worth going to - lots of information relevant to service families.

I have two with sn, (one with cerebral palsy and one with ADHD/ aspergers traits) as well as an nt one... Dh retired last year. Smile
