Has anyone suspended an OT type swing from a ceiling joist?

Would love to, but how on earth do you assess the safety side. Can they be hung from any joist?

do you mean sling?

chonky · 19/02/2006 10:32

We're wanting to do this for dd bska, so will watch this post with interest. Dd's about to outgrow her boucer, but to get any peace at all we'll need something that she can be rocked in.
We're about to have a small bit of building work done in our kitchen so were planning to ask the builder to assess whether our joist would be safe. Is asking a builder maybe an option?

chonky · 19/02/2006 10:32

baka I mean

If I could find one chonky- I've had one promising to come and give me a quote for 2 years I do have a roofer coming soon so perhaps I could ask him?

That sort of thing buzylizy- I'm trying to make a playroom that is kind of like this . You may have to login to Yahoo to see the photo, but I don't think you have to be a group member. At the moment we have things like a balance beam, a trampoline, a birth ball, but a disk swing, or a hammock swing or something wu ld be great.

chonly- there are lots of hammock chairs that might be an option for rocking? Some designed for kids.

You can get special hooks frm Ikea , I think (although iirc that is a long way from you).shown here . We have the hanging seat and used that with pig-tail type screw-in hooks outside.

i will ask dh when he wakes up from his siesta! he's in the building trade so normally knows these things.

buzylizy · 19/02/2006 17:11

he said that you could do it but would need to spread the weight between to joists. That is what we had to do when we had a hoist track put up. If you don't it would bow the joist over time. Hope that helps.

very helpful thank you.

baka - where have you seen the children's hammocks chairs please? I think we'll need some sort of hardbacked swing to help her with trunk control etc. for some of the time, but something where she could lie and relax would be great too.
The trouble is she rolls everywhere, so really we'd need something with straps otherwise she'd be on the floor in no time.

BTW - that 'floortime' room looks great

all over- tridias do a lovely one- pricey (75 quid for just the chair) but looks very sturdy (I've seen it in the flesh so to speak in a shop) . Spacekraft do a lot of different types with and without stands.

OK I've found a fantastic fold up swing frame, designed by someone with an autistic child- takes adults + complete with 3 different swing seats- looks fab but is £1000!!!!! Hurumph.

I did see this bit on the accessories

Suspension Hooks
Don't let bad weather interfere with the enjoyment of swinging. Very strong pair of screw-in hooks to suspend a swing or Leaf Chair from a ceiling beam. It will be necessary to drill pilot holes.
Price: £17.50

Thanks- I'll have a look- I'm just terrified about somehting landing on ds1's head!
