Has anyone been in this position? What is the percentage of having another AS baby?

I did see a thread about the risks of late pregnancy a long time ago, but didn't take any notice as I thought I would never be in this situation.

Any comments would be gratefully received, thank you.

Thanks mamadadawahwah for that. I'll get in touch with them today, it's a shame this screening isn't offered to people like us automatically, or at least advised. The last time we saw the neurologist he asked us to find out if we had lead pipes in our cottage (over a hundred years old). I haven't done this yet am not sure how, or what pipes he means exactly - would it be the ones actually in the house? Should I get a plumber in to tell me do you think?

He has had a diagnosis of possible ataxic cerebral palsy, but I wonder if he suspects autism too.

I think the pipes they mean are the ones that bring the water into the house. I know years ago they used to be made of lead. try phoning your water company if they can't help they will be able to tell you who can.

Dear NTT, we phoned the council to come and test our water. This is a free service. HOWEVER, make sure they test the mains water and not the tank water (like the idiot who did my test did) and make sure they do two tests..one after running the water for five minutes and one after just turning the tap on. Reason being, is you want to know if the lead is in the stale water and how much and you want to know if the lead clears after the pipes run for a bit.

We have lead pipes from the road to the house and our only option is to pay thousands to get the pipes renewed or get a water filter for a couple hundred. We are going for the latter option.

Also, as you know lead is everywhere. Its in soil, it could be in the soil where the run off is from your lead flashing on the house, its in the air and of course old paint.

Get the council to check for other heavy metals too like arsenic etc. If you tell them that your child has been tested for lead and that it is a "medical" problem, they will be out immediately. At least thats what happened with us.

There is so much to consider about what is going on in our kids' bodies in terms of the environment and there is plenty one can do in terms of biomedical intervention for children who are on the spectrum. Its a minefield but once you start researching you just cant believe the ins and outs of it. WE have been at this for 6 months now and have seen a VAST improvement in our child.

My ds1 is on the ASD and it has never cross my mind not to have another child. I did think of the possibilities of having another child with ASD. My DS1 is the only child in a VERY extended family with this problem. We went for it and my DS2 is OK. I had him when I was 40 and they are 2 extremely different children bring us lots of joy in so many different ways I am extremely proud of both my children they have a right to be here and we have given them that right.
Good luck in your decision making surely you will make the right one

Thanks very much for all your views - I really appreciate them. Testing certainly sounds the right way to go, I hadn't even thought of it!

By the way Davros - the man from DelMonte - he say "YES!" (Mad man!) Grin

Time is even more critical than it was a while ago. Typically, I have a pending operation - but this could be upto a 6 month wait. Then recouperation time and then try and get pregnant - by that time, effectively I could be nearer 42 than 40! Arrrgghhhhh!

Nothing seems simple does it?

Choco, to be honest, your body isnt going to change much at 42, from 40.
