ADOS tomorrow - will they tell us what they think then and there?

DS3 finally has his ADOS tomorrow and I am wondering whether we'll get told their opinions at the end of the assessment or will have to wait? I don't think I'll be able to bare it if they don't give any indications.

I asked the SLT her opinion and she said that she was not allowed to give the dx but she thought that she was looking at a boy with AS. Even at the first appt with the paed I asked and she told me that she suspected ASD.

Ben10NeverAgain · 22/05/2012 20:14

I meant to say all the best tomorrow.

Desperatelyseekingsupport · 22/05/2012 20:16

We were told after the test (not the result we wanted though Sad). Hope all goes well for you.

zen1 · 22/05/2012 20:18

Thank you Ben10. The paed has already said that in her opinion he has ASD, but I just worry because he can seem incredibly sociable and compliant on a 1 to 1 basis and might just be really engaging tomorrow.

I asked if they suspected anything at DS's first appointment with his paed, and they did say either ASD or a language disorder. It was ASD, confirmed 5 months later.

zen1 · 22/05/2012 20:19

Thanks Desparately. I guess I just want it officially confirmed.

Sorry, crossed. If they already suspect ASD, I'd go with that. It won't do him any harm if it turns out not to be.

zen1 · 22/05/2012 20:27

I know it sounds strange to say want him diagnosed, but I do so we can access services.

It's not strange. I wanted the dx too as I was convinced it was. I was actually petrified that they would say it wasn't as then where would we be.

Desperatelyseekingsupport · 22/05/2012 20:38

My ds was in his element chatting to the two young ladies Hmm. We gave them an extensive list of all his difficulties only to be told he did not have the triad of impairments. He even gave a very literal response to one question (what do you think you will be when you're 18? 18 of course) but they all found it funny. They did give us a dx though - behavioural difficulties which was very helpful - not!.

zen1 · 22/05/2012 20:49

Well, DS3 is definately not able to answer any complex questions (he's 3), but like Ben10 am hugely worried they might say it's not ASD (even though I am convinced and have been for a couple of years).

OP posts:
Ben10NeverAgain · 22/05/2012 20:59

They won't ask any complex questions to a 3 year old. DS is 6 and he didn't have anything complex. This is what they do below. There are different modules dependent on the level of your child. DS is verbal so did module 3:

Thanks Ben10, will take a look now Smile

I was told the dx on the same day as the test. DS uses phrased speech so he did module 2 of the test.

Jerbil · 23/05/2012 07:55

Beware of second guessing it all. I had assumed DS1 scored on ADOS but has passed it twice now (i.e. not ASD except for one section), having said that he has been dx ASD! But it's taken a second opinion. It doesn't check for imagination but looks for things like eye contact, reciprocation, the subtle things really that I don't even know/think about. DS1 is actually quite good at those things and that hides his ASD. However, our psychiatrist was able to see through that. He is good on a 1:1 like your DC and can appear very sociable but usually on his terms. very controlling. We've had 2 ADOS now and not got the result on the same day. They do have to score it and where I am they video it and get another to score it too. Best of luck; it's so hard to wait. I hate the waiting game, not knowing is the worst. xx

Chundle · 23/05/2012 10:27

Good luck!!! My dd sounds very much like Jerbils ds. She is almost 3 and we are awaiting ados , can you report back and let me know how you get on plz?? We are booked in to see Daphne keen in September in case we are still waiting for ados then!

zen1 · 23/05/2012 11:09

Yes Chundle I'll report back (it is this afternoon) Smile. My DS also sounds similar Jerbil; can be quite charming with good eye contact on a 1:1 but also very controlling. His language is delayed and atypical, but he can make himself understood verbally and has fairly good understanding.

devilinside · 23/05/2012 11:24

We received our diagnosis 20 mins after the ADOS (the fact that DS managed to not communicate through most of it, obviously sped things along)

Ben10NeverAgain · 23/05/2012 11:51

It did test ds's imagination. She showed him how she told a story pretending that a Peg was a lady and a stick was a man for example. He just moved all the bits into a line and he isn't normally a liner upper!

zen1 · 23/05/2012 11:59

Well, if he gets given a stick, he will say "it's a stick" followed by "Expelliarmus" (older brothers are into Harry Potter and are always picking up sticks pretending they're wands!) Grin

OP posts:
Ben10NeverAgain · 23/05/2012 12:09

Ds just looked as if she were insane... While studiously avoiding any eye contact!

cwtch4967 · 23/05/2012 15:46

In my area you don't get the results on the day but at a follow up appointment within a week. DS did his ADOS at 3 and his behaviour on the day was typical for him - everyone had agreed from 2.5 that it seemed like ASD but it took ages to get the dx due to waiting lists.

BentFinger · 23/05/2012 16:03

Hope the test went ok.

Sorry for having started my own thread, I didn't see this one here. Should I ask for it to be deleted? i don't post here very often, so not really too sure of the etiquette.

Would it be ok to put my own questions on here?

Ben10NeverAgain · 23/05/2012 19:07

Hope it went OK.

Bent If you post your own thread then you'll get loads of responses. I'll go an dhave a look for it.
