Nursery have just told me they think DS2 needs a referral for his speech.

DS1 has HFA, I am perfectly content that DS2 is pretty much NT, but his speech is definitely delayed in phonology. Content is fine, pretty good in fact.

Just having an "oh shit" moment! The thought of starting all over again with endless appointments etc. ARGH.

Does anyone have children who have issues with speech and nothing else?

My 2yo won't stop talking. Grin

But no, sorry, not just speech issues alone here. Our DGS has speech problems without any other issues, and I think they're really struggling getting him more assistance from SALT.

Sorry, I didn't meant that comment about my 2yo to seem flip or bragging. It was mainly a "dear lord, the boy never ceases to chatter!!"

4yo nt dnephew has a dx of selective mutism and "behavioural difficulties" linked to his cunt of a father plus 6yo dniece's lfa. He's now in reception and rapidly outgoing both (as far as it appears from here, obviously things might be different from dsil's pov). It appears it just took him a while to realise that other dc would talk back to him, plus he's shy around strange adults - I didnt actually know he needed assessing until dsil told us he'd been to the paed.

He loves Reception and is making excellent progress despite a few regular mispronunciations eg drown for brown :)

Triggles DS2 Never Shuts Up. Ever.

I'm really not worried about ASD, he has fantastic imaginative play. I guess I should get his hearing checked, and his mouth muscles etc.

I have focussed so much on DS1 and his difficulties, DS2 was actually referred ages ago to SALT as he had no speech at 2, but by the time the appt came through he was chatting away, age appropriately, so I didn't take it up.

My DS1 had very delayed speech. He is extremely geeky but definitely NT. DS2 didn't speak either, but he was DX with ASD at 3. In retrospect, the main difference was DS1 tried to communicate, used his few words in all sorts of contexts ('wall' meant wall, bricks, blocks, lego, buildings, castles etc.) and had pretty good joint attention. He would point out things of interest and give me eye contact to share his interest. DS2 really didn't. DS1 was also a late reader. I have read somewhere that it is fairly common that siblings of those with autism may have some mild communication problems, but don't quote me on that. DS1 is now 14, really good at maths and just about average at English. I have no worries about him at all.

So, yes, it's possible to have just speech issues. I'm sure others will come along with better information. Obviously when one DC has a DX, you watch the others like a hawk, can't help it. My DS3 talked the earliest but he's a bit on the quirky side! Grin

Ah, crossed. Call on one of the SALTs on the board, maybe. Moondog or Working9til5.

Triggles · 22/05/2012 19:51

I agree that we do watch the next child like a hawk. Poor DS3 has been discussed at length over every point of his development. No speech issues, but we are a tad worried about his intractable behaviour. He is two, however, and I suspect it's due to the "terrible twos" more than anything.

PurplePidjin · 22/05/2012 20:10

Like Ellen said - it can be "learned behaviour" like dnephew assuming that, because big sister didn't play/talk to him, other kids wouldn't :)

TheLightPassenger · 22/05/2012 20:23

honestly, virtually everyone outside the SN board who I spoke to with experience of SALT for their children/grandchildren/dog's canary was for children with phonological issues only. It is possible to have speech sound issues and nothing else. If you are happy with the content of his language and understanding of language I would be very reassured.
