LEA funding for independent specialist dyslexia schools

I am rather confused as independent specialist dyslexia schools say on their websites, and the ofsted or equilavent private report, and the crested resport say that around 70% of pupils in a number of schools are funded by their LEA. How?? Does anybody have a statement for a child with a specific learning disorder rather than an underlying lifelong condition or have secured specialist teaching for them? A member of the teaching staff at such a school told DH that the best way of getting LEA funding was if the child was a school refuser rather than the 'severity' of pure dyslexic difficulties.

My husband's cousin who is about 14 is attending a residential school for severe dyslexia funded by the LEA. His mum had to go to Tribunal to get it.

Thanks Ben I assumed going to tribunal was par for the course - isn't it always! Main thing is they won. Do you know how severe the dyslexia was and whether there were additional factors?

I'm sorry I don't know the severity other than he was hugely struggling at school. It all happened before DS's issues became evident otherwise I would have asked more questions.
