the incessant talking about a particular subject...how do you deal with it?

At the moment we have a once a day 5 minute period where ds has to do all his talking in his head. This is about all he can manage and once the 5 minutes are up he is practically bursting to spill all those silent thoughts out again. My aim is to increase the number of times he needs to do this or the length of time he does this for but I think this goal is more about my needs than his. I have to say that the other several hours of play by play commentary with constant 'mum' interjections to make sure he has my attention are getting a little wearying. How do you deal with it and do you moderate the obsession at all. DS has very specific sequences of setting up army formations or camps and then commentating on each stage of the building and operation of the "troops" he doesn't like you to engage in the conversation ie won't answer questions about what he is doing but does require your undivided attention to what he is saying.
I am finding it hard to deal with at the moment. As I type this he is setting up a very complicated scenario with the blocks and getting very annoyed when I look down at the computer screen instead of at what he is doing and saying.

LOL!

Well, I suppose someone has to do it. Probably will have a glowing career in quality assurance.

We have had the death obsession with DS telling his grandparents when he thinks they might peg it Blush. It is currently kids TV schedules. My tactic is to hide in the loo but I have started telling him that I am not interested in whether Scooby Doo starts at 5 or 5.30 and that he needs to find something that we can both talk about! He has been OK with that. We had a lively discussion on timezones tonight!

Ds has had an ongoing obsession with geology and a couple of years ago was staring at my mum in an odd way. When asked what was up he replied that he was trying to figure out how to turn her into a fossil when she died and how long would it take him.

'Tis a hobby. You would be very surprised to know that manhole covers have very interesting designs on them - often just the place name of where they are situated but some have images of palm trees (Lloret in Spain) prancing deer (Rhodes Old Town) etc. I've heard that the ones in Japan are particularly elaborate.

Have a look next time you're somewhere different.

42 on the BC test and dx'd Aspie by CAMHS (when they were doing DS)

I can see the attraction of an interest in shipping lines, imagine all those ships going off to exciting places in the Med and beyond Blush and all those nice Sicilian Aeolian Islands.

WetAugust · 23/05/2012 21:22

Aeolian Islands - now you're talking.

Visited Stromboli and Panarea a few years back. If I ever win Euromillions I shall buy myself a little white house there. Fantastic places.

Loving this thread. Although having wished for ages for DS to acknowledge us, we may soon be wishing he'd pipe down a bit Grin

TheLightPassenger · 23/05/2012 22:01

I've only been to Lipari, as that was the quickest ferry trip from Messina. I love Sicily, haven't been since the pre child days. Maybe one day we will be able to afford it again!

WetAugust · 23/05/2012 22:35

Sicily is one of the most interesting and beautiful places I have ever visited. I had no idea that just about everyone had conquered it.

I didn't get to Lipari as the other 2 islands were just a day trip but would love to go back one day and visit Lipari and Volcano.

Saw a Mafia funeral at the Cathedral in Palermo - bodyguards with ear pieces the lot. Must admit I did feel there was a bit of an undercurrent to the place.

This year it's back to Scilly. Different islands but just as beautiful.

Yes - another of my obsesions is islands Grin

mariasalome · 24/05/2012 00:06

I only got 32 but do a nice line in rolling obsessions myself. they all come in handy eventually.

The psychological dyamics of failing departments was a previous one its going to combine well with the current SEN tribunal tactics Wink

WetAugust · 24/05/2012 00:36

Whoa - Psychological Dynamics! That went straight over my head Maria.

I tend to have more 'collector' type obsessions - hence 7 of my push bikes in the garage -my latest obssession Blush

Can never decide hwich one to ride

Hi Pipin

Have only ever sailed past Capri - never actually landed. It's on the To Do List Grin

You and my Aspie EXH would have been a marriage made in heaven. He could tell you the make and model of a car by its engine noise.

Capri is lovely but avoid Capri town itself - full of designer shops etc, Anacapri, a bus ride higher up is stunning.

TheLightPassenger · 24/05/2012 15:47

yy to Palermo - in Naples the poverty etc was overt, in Palermo rather more covert. As a tourist it's easy to maintain the happy naive facade. Particularly as completely accidentally (seriously!) we booked a hotel in one of the most modern poshest bits just outside the centre.
