Hi all quick question. Dd2 starts preschool in Sept. Nursery have agreed to get funding for a 1:1 does this mean she will have a statement?,or does it mean she will be on early years action plus ? Or an IEP? I'm a bit confused!! Nursery have asked me to go in Friday and look over 'something' not sure what the 'something' is!

I would clarify with the nursery how many hours the 1:1 will be funded for. It may be that they can categorize your DD as 'School Action Plus' and find a few hours of support for her that way.

A Statement of Special Educational Needs is a big step above SA+. You or the nursery would need to apply to your local authority for Statutory Assessment (a gathering of evidence for them to decide whether or not your DD needs a Statement) and then a legally binding document would be issued outlining the support your DD requires and drawing down funding to support that.

It is highly unlikely you would get full or even half time 1:1 support for a child without a Statement, at least not for longer than a term or so.

An IEP is an Individual Education Plan, which is a document drawn up by the school and agreed with you, outlining short and long term targets for behaviour / academic progress etc for your child. A child on School Action, School Action Plus or with a Statement would have regular-ish IEPs (termly, or bi-anually etc).

Just give them a ring back tomorrow and ask them. Always best to get the info straight from them.

Great thanks guys. They said that they needed to apply for funding quickly as deadline was soon for it. They've sent off form with some copies of our pead letters as evidence. She will o ly be at nursery for 2.5 hrs a day. I'll ask on Friday

Hi,
It's all so confusing isn't it!
My son is at pre-school. He's in a special needs placement that means he gets 15 hours of 1 to 4 support. During this time is meant to have at least 4 hours of 1 to 1 support.
We have an IEP document which is exactly what lovelywine has described. We meet at the end of every term (which in reality is more like every2 terms) to agree some targets for the following term.

We are starting to apply for a statement in September so that it's in place for next september when he starts school.

In my experience you really have to ask people to explain things to you because they seem to assume you are psychic! When we were shown around the pre school M had been diagnosed 2 weeks and I was asked 'Will he qualify for the Special Needs Funding?'. Like anybody would know the answer to that 2 weeks after diagnosis!!
Good luck xx

Dd2 had 1-1 at nursery for three years without a statement. Quite often the early years team at the LA has a pot of money which can be used in this way to provide early support, so it is by no means impossible that this level of support can't be maintained. She was statements for yr r. We didn't have any bother at all with funding for the 1-1.

If dd has other professionals (physio, ot, SLT, whoever) involved in her care, then the nursery should list her as school action plus and prepare an iep termly. Best practice is for both parents and outside professionals eg SLT, to be consulted during the target setting process. In dd2's case, the therapists would visit the school once a term to ensure the 1-1 was up to date and they were all informed about changing needs.

Agree with everyone else - please ask at the Nursery. Just tell them you are not clear about where the funding might be coming from. If it is the LA's Early Years Inclusion pot, I@d be very surprised if they can get 1:1 all the time - our budget has been pole-axed, at a time when we are getting more and more children with really complex needs attending our Nurseries. It really is the bare minimum Sad.

If you, or they do think your dc will need a Statment, then ask them if they have started that procedure. It's a LONG procedure, so worth asking about now, particularly if you think she might be better in a school that's not your catchment one.

Thanks for all your advice guys!
Mad I'm getting the feeling its out of a big pot of early years money.
