Hi my son goes to secondary school mainstream , has a statement of special education needs . Which he's had from primary . A letter home in his bag this evening about consultation to academy status . Responses to be back by next week . We live out of bough . So his additional funding for his special needs comes from another bough . Although the school in last few weeks have been very good and increased support . As son struggles to keep up especially with written work . He's doing very well now following a very difficult start. Main question is how will this all affect his support . If anyone else has gone though this could you let me know your outcomes. Thanks for any help offered.

Being an academy has no effect in their legal requirements wrt SEN.

As with all schools the most important thing is the HT and SENCOs attitude to SEN.

Those people won't change with converting, so nothing much is likely to change.

There have been awful cases of academies acting illegally wrt SEN - but of course the same can be said of maintained schools.

Senco is leaving at end of term . The other teacher whose taken her place don't really have feel for , only meet her at open evening when looking round schools and didn't much like her then . Never meet head teacher so don't know what her views are . The teacher whose senco at moment has sorted out various problems since sept. and has been very support . Wish she wasn't leaving but have to wait and see. Thanks for the reply
